Ursus V. Portmann, known as “Doc” to his friends, became Adelbert College’s mainspring in the first decade of the century. Among his athletic accomplishments, Doc captained the 1908 football team to a 9-1 season, including an 18-0 victory versus Ohio State. He also captained his class basketball team and ran track. Portmann was selected to the WRU 50-Year Football All-Star Team at the guard position and was called the school’s top lineman of all time by the committee.
