Baseball at Case Institute of Technology in the early 1900s wasnot just a sport, but an event that everyone in the CIT communitylooked forward to each spring. From 1906-09, the Rough Riderscaptured three Big Nine titles, the equivalent to a statechampionship in Ohio, and regularly defeated tough competition suchas the College of Wooster, Ohio Wesleyan University, and The OhioState University. Harry Figgie was a four-year starter at thirdbase during that time, and his “tough as nails” defenseand consistent hitting paved the way for many Rough Ridervictories. Figgie had three career hits against Ohio State, including a key base-hit and a run scored that sparked an 8-2victory for CIT on May 10, 1907. During his career, Figgie and CITclaimed two wins versus Ohio State. Despite being hampered by afoot injury his senior year, Figgie batted leadoff and wasconsidered the best “third-sacker” in the conference. He embodied a school spirit that the entire student body admired. Not only was Harry Figgie a great baseball player, he was a greatteammate, student and leader both on and off the field.
