George Newman was a four-year letterwinner as a pitcher with theWestern Reserve University Red Cats from 1951 to 1954. His proudestaccomplishment with the team was being selected as an All-MidAmerican Conference player his junior and senior seasons, recordingwins over then conference rivals Kent State University, BowlingGreen State University and Marshall University. As a senior,Newman received the WRU baseball team’s MVP award. Whileattending dental school, Newman played semi-professional baseballin the Cleveland Plain Dealer Triple AAA League, recording a 20-2record on the mound in 1956. Newman received offers to play withfour major league baseball teams, including the Cleveland Indians,but instead chose to continue pursuing a career in dentistry. Hegraduated magna cum laude from the Western Reserve Universitydental school in 1957 and ranked second in his class of 60students. He was a charter member of the Greater Cleveland SportsHall of Fame and was inducted with Cleveland professional sporticons Otto Graham and Bob Feller.
