In addition to being a record-breaking hurdler in track, Ray Barney was a standout performer on the football field, basketball court and hockey rink. In his junior and senior years, Barney set records while winning the 120 and 220-yard hurdles in the Big Six Track Meet. Barney qualified for the Olympic trials, where he competed and broke the world record in the highs, but was unable to compete in the Olympics because it would have meant missing too many classes at Western Reserve’s Medical School. The attributes that made him a great hurdler helped Barney become an All-Ohio running back in football as well. When winter came, Barney excelled as a shooting guard in basketball. And, when a hockey team was formed his senior year to replace basketball, Barney was named captain and proved as adept at shooting goals with a hockey puck as he was with a basketball.
