Menyhert "Maestro" Kadar led the resurgence of Western Reserve University/Case Western Reserve University fencing from little-known program to player on the national and international stage. Kadar totaled 28 seasons as a coach on the Cleveland campuses, leading the Western Reserve Red Cats from 1955-69 and the combined CWRU Spartans from 1969-79 and 1981-85. Starting with a team of mostly new fencers, he mentored two All-Americans, including a national champion, and one Olympian. In 1969, Kadar oversaw the merger of the WRU and Case Institute of Technology fencing teams, and, in 1974, he was instrumental in getting the NCAA Championships to Adelbert Gymnasium. A well-respected coach in the fencing world, he led multiple fencing coaches' associations and earned the title of "Maestro" from the National Fencing Coaches Association of America. Kadar made a profound impact on the local community, running his own fencing business in Independence and working for the Cleveland Recreation Department early in his career.
