Tom Courtad is the most prolific tackler in the history ofSpartan football. A native of Aurora, Ohio, Courtad finished hiscareer with a school-record 521 tackles while setting the CWRUrecords for a season in 1997 (191) and a game (30) in 1998. The1998 University Athletic Association Defensive Player of the Year,Courtad became an All-American as a senior with selections to theHewlett Packard College Division All-America Team and theAssociated Press Little All-America Third Team. For hiscareer, Courtad was a three-time All-UAA selection (1996-98) aswell as a two-time All-North Coast Athletic Conference honoree(1997-98). He earned the team’s John Anderson Award asunderclassman MVP in 1996 and the Bill Grice Award as team MVP inboth 1997 and 1998. In addition to his 521 tackles, the 1998 ArthurP. Leary Award winner amassed seven sacks, five forced fumbles andtwo fumble recoveries. In the classroom, Courtad was a 1998 CoSIDAsecond-team Academic All-American® as a nutrition major.
