CWRU Athletics

Art Leary played a leading role in the athletic program at CIT and CWRU over a 46-year period. After standout career on the football team as an undergraduate at CIT, Leary returned to help coach football and tennis while he taught physics. He was named athletic director at the age of 29 and held that position for nine years, during which time he was responsible for much of the planning for the Emerson Physical Education Center. As athletic director, he hired coaching greats Bill Sudeck, Doug Mooney, and Bob Del Rosa. Leary helped form the Presidents’ Athletic Conference, the North Coast Athletic Conference and the University Athletic Association.
