Mitzie Levine Verne was a three-sport athlete in golf, bowling and tennis at Mather College in the early 1940’s. Verne was Oakwood Country Club Women’s Golf Champ in 1940 and 1969 as well as Cleveland City Golf Championship runner-up in 1942. She also was a member of the Phi Beta Kappa honor society and graduated Magna Cum Laude. After graduation her husband, Dr. Daniel Verne, was stationed in Japan. While there she founded the Mitzie Verne Collection of Japanese Art. Over the years, Verne was involved in numerous other activities associated with CWRU, including being selected along with her husband in 1994 as the Most Distinguished Alumni of CWRU. She also co-authored the book The Emperor Was My Neighbor in Japan with her daughter, Betsy Franco.
