David Hutter served 19 years as Case Western Reserve University’s director of athletics and chair of the Department of Physical Education. He contributed to the creation of the University Athletic Association, in which the Spartan varsity athletic teams participate, helping to shape the Association into the premier conference in Division III. He served as sport committee chair for numerous conference sports and saw his Spartan teams claim eight North Coast Athletic Conference and nine University Athletic Association championships. On campus, Hutter contributed to the design, planning and construction of multiple athletic facilities, his most influential being the North Residential Village athletic facility, which is among the best in Division III. Since 2005, the football, soccer, track and field, baseball and softball teams called the space home. In 2008, the department honored Hutter by naming the Male Athlete of the Year award in his honor.
