Anderson won three football letters at Western Reserve in 1938, 1939, and 1940, playing center as a sophomore and blocking quarterback in his final two years. He was one of the stars of the Sun Bowl in 1940, the only bowl appearance in Reserve history. Anderson enlisted in the Navy in 1942, playing football for the Great Lakes squad while serving as a Chief Specialist during World War II.
