Nancy Gray will be remembered as a woman who broke new ground byadvancing women’s sports at Case Western Reserve Universitywhile assuring the women of Mather College their place in history.Gray was chosen to head up the first varsity women’sbasketball team in 1971 following the federation of Case Instituteof Technology and Western Reserve University in 1967. Gray posted a73-71 record in 12 seasons as Case Western Reserve’s originalwomen’s basketball coach and, until 2000, she held the recordfor most victories in women’s basketball. She also was theUniversity’s first women’s soccer coach and primarywomen’s athletics administrator as designated by the NCAA.One of her proudest accomplishments is the fact that four of herformer players are members of the Spartan Club Hall ofFame: Ann Harsh (1972), Billie Navojosky (1972), Beth Bickford(1981) and Peggy Musser (1983). Gray served Case Western Reservefor 32 years as an associate professor of physical education,tennis coach, soccer coach, associate athletic director andcoordinator of physical education.
