#5 Spartans Open NCAA Play with Second-Round Win over ONU

The fifth-ranked Case Western Reserve University Spartans opened up play at the 2026 NCAA Division III Men's Tennis Championship with a 4-1 win over 63rd-ranked Ohio Northern University in the second round on Saturday morning at the Medical Mutual Tennis Pavilion in Cleveland.

The Spartans improved to 27-8 overall with the win, while the Polar Bears ended their campaign with a 14-9 mark.

CWRU will advance to the third round of the NCAA Division III Championship on Sunday at the Carlton Courts in Cleveland against the winner of the other second-round match between 15th-ranked Mary Washington and Whitman. The match is scheduled for a noon start.

Stats and Standouts


  • The Spartans recovered after the doubles point, winning each of the five singles matches that were decided and leading in the sixth when play was stopped due to decision.

  • Sophomore Rowan Matorin picked up the straight-set win at no. 5 singles to clinch the match for CWRU.

  • 29th-ranked senior Matthew Plunkett evened the score at 1-1 with a win at no. 2 singles, while junior Santiago Salazar Garza gave the Spartans their first lead of the match with his straight-set victory at no. 1 singles. Graduate student Ansh Shah added a straight-set win at no. 4 singles to put CWRU a victory away from clinching.

  • Seniors Anmay Devaraj and Rohan Bhat picked up the only doubles win of the match for the Spartans with a 6-1 victory. Bhat and Devaraj also led in the third and sixth singles matches, respectively when play was stopped.
