No. 5 Spartans Split Senior Day Matches on Saturday

The fifth-ranked Case Western Reserve University men's tennis team split a pair of matches on 'Senior Day' at the Carlton Courts in Cleveland on Saturday, besting Baldwin Wallace University 7-0 in the morning before suffering a 5-2 loss to the third-ranked University of Chicago in the afternoon.

The Spartans now stand at 23-7 overall and put an end to the Yellow Jackets' nine-match winning streak, as Baldwin Wallace fell to 11-2. The Maroons improved to 14-3 for the campaign with the win.

Stats and Standouts


  • The Spartans' doubles play shined on Saturday, as CWRU won five of the six contests over the two matches. Senior Anmay Devaraj and graduate student Bryce Ware secured the clinching point in the win over Baldwin Wallace.

  • Ware was also a part of the doubles clincher against UChicago. He and junior Trey Lambright, ranked third in the region, bested Alexander Ekstrand and Markus Ekstrand, ranked seventh, 7-5 at no. 1 doubles. Junior Santiago Salazar Garza and sophomore Rowan Matorin picked up a win at no. 2 doubles earlier in the match.

  • The Spartans finished the day 7-5 in singles matches. First-year Glen Ngo had the match-clinching point at no. 5 singles against Baldwin Wallace.

  • Graduate student Ansh Shah had the team's only singles win against UChicago, claiming a three-set victory over Michael Choi at no. 4 singles.

  • Saturday marked 'Senior Day' for the Spartans, as the team recognized its four graduating senior players - Rohan Bhat, Anmay Devaraj, Matthew Plunkett, and Justin Prochnow - along with senior student assistant coach Jackson Schuetzle. Together, the group has reached the NCAA Tournament each of the last three years, winning the National Championship in 2023 and finishing as the runner-up last year, claimed UAA Championships in 2023 and 2025, and notched a 112-23 overall record. 

  • Ngo became the 12th different CWRU player to clinch a match this season for the Spartans.

  • CWRU is 5-6 against nationally-ranked teams this season with wins over then top-ranked Denison, ninth-ranked Swarthmore, 11th-ranked Kenyon, 11th-ranked Johns Hopkins, and 36th-ranked Southwestern.

  • The Spartans stand at  7-2 in home matches this season. Saturday's contests were the team's first two this season outside at the Carlton Courts.

  • CWRU has won the doubles point in 25 of its 30 matches this season. The Spartans are 21-4 when winning the doubles point.

The Spartans will play one final match before the 2026 University Athletic Association Championship, hosting 10th-ranked Carnegie Mellon University next Saturday, April 18, in Cleveland.
