The Case Western Reserve University men's tennis team will take to the court for the first time during the 2026-27 year when the squad travels to Granville, Ohio, this weekend to open its season at the Denison Invitational.

The Spartans will be back on the court for the first time since reaching the semifinals of the NCAA Division III Championship last year, marking the fifth time in the last six seasons that the team has finished among the final four teams in the country and the sixth-straight season the squad has made it to at least the quarterfinals. The Spartans finished the season with a 29-9 overall record, tied for the second-most victories in a season in program history. CWRU went 26-8 against all Division III competition, 10-8 against nationally-ranked Division III teams, and 5-5 against teams ranked in the top-10 nationally. The Spartans ended the campaign ranked fifth in Division III and were ranked as high as third during the year, while falling no lower than seventh in the national poll.

CWRU also placed second at the University Athletic Association Championship during the campaign, the team's fifth-consecutive top-two finish in the league.

Among the team's top returners are a pair of All-Americans in seniors Santiago Salazar Garza and Trey Lambright. Salazar Garza played at the no. 1 singles spot for the Spartans for most of the spring and reached the round of 16 of the singles draw at the NCAA Individual Championship, while Lambright made it to the quarterfinals of the NCAA doubles draw with former Spartan Bryce Ware. Junior Rowan Matorin is another top returner for the Spartans, after securing an All-UAA honorable mention for his work at no. 5 singles and no. 2 doubles last year.

CWRU is also expected to receive a boost with the return of George Kosseifi, who would have likely been the team's top singles player in dual matches, but suffered an injury that caused him to miss the entire spring campaign. Kosseifi reached the semifinals of the singles draw at the ITA Fall Regional last year prior to seeing his season come to a close.

The Spartans will also be looking for contributions from several other experienced players. Junior Jon Totorica ended his sophomore season as the 60th-ranked singles player in Division III and has formed a formidable doubles duo with fellow junior Leon Chen throughout their careers, reaching the quarterfinals of the ITA Fall Regionals doubles draw last year. Junior Konrad Kwiatkowski added a 9-1 singles record last spring, and could see his role on the team elevated, as could junior Rohit Jain, who went undefeated in singles matches last year with an 11-0 mark.

Other key returners for the Spartans include senior Derek Shiffer, junior Luke Saylor, and sophomores Shay Gupta, Ethan Jacob, Xander Jhaveri, Glen Ngo, and Nikhil Ramani.

In addition to the talented group of returners, the Spartans have also added sophomore transfer Adam Memije, who was both the Presidents' Athletic Conference Player of the Year and Newcomer of the Year last year as a first-year player at Allegheny College.

In addition, nine first-year players are scheduled to make their collegiate debut for the Spartans this fall, including Arnav Arora, David Bell, Jaden Dai, Harry Glickstein, Evan Kaufman, Luca Ospino, Rishi Palle, Deepinder Singh, and Daniel Zhang.

The Spartans are slated to compete at the Denison Invitation this Saturday and Sunday. In addition to CWRU and Denison, other teams scheduled to compete include DePauw, Carnegie Mellon, and Kenyon. Live results will be available on ioncourt, and live video will be available if the matches are played outside. In addition to the Denison Invitational, the Spartans are scheduled to compete the following weekend as well, splitting the squad between the Everybody vs. Cancer Invitational at the University of Toledo in Toledo, Ohio, and the Oberlin Invitational in Oberlin, Ohio. CWRU will then turn its attention to the ITA Fall Central Region Championship, hosted by Wabash College in Crawfordsville, Indiana, from October 2 - 4, with advancing players earning a spot in the ITA Cup in Rome, Georgia, from October 15 - 18.
