No. 3 Spartans Cap Off Spring Break with Win over #9 Swarthmore

The third-ranked Case Western Reserve University men's tennis team finished off its spring break trip in thrilling fashion, coming from behind to defeat ninth-ranked Swarthmore College 4-3 in Georgetown, Texas, on Friday afternoon. The Spartans also claimed a 7-0 win over West Chester University earlier in the day in Orlando, Florida.

The Spartans went 8-2 over spring break, split between Florida and Texas, to improve to 19-4 overall for the season. Swarthmore dropped to 5-5, while West Chester fell to 1-4.

Stats and Standouts


  • CWRU went 3-3 in doubles matches and 10-2 in singles contests on Friday.

  • The Spartans battled back after dropping all three doubles matches against Swarthmore to win the match. Senior Anmay Devaraj provided the clinching win, breaking a 3-3 tie with a three-set win at no. 3 singles against Nikola Galov.

  • Senior Matthew Plunkett bested Max Lindstrom, ranked 25th in Division III, at no. 2 singles during the match, while sophomores Jon Totorica (no. 4 singles) and Rowan Matorin (no. 6 singles) each added victories for CWRU.

  • Against West Chester, sophomore Konrad Kwiatkowski clinched the doubles point with first-year Shay Gupta at no. 2 doubles and clinched the match with a straight-set win in the first singles match.

  • CWRU finished their spring break drop with a combined 58-14 (.806) record in singles matches and a 21-15 (.583) mark in doubles contests.

  • The Spartans' sweep over West Chester was the team's 12th 7-0 win of the campaign.

  • CWRU has won the doubles point in 19 of its 23 matches this season. The Spartans are 17-2 when winning the doubles point.

  • The Spartans improved to 5-0 all-time against Swarthmore.

  • Friday's game was the first-ever meeting between CWRU and West Chester.

  • Including the fall, CWRU stands at 218-81 (.729) in singles play and 86-50 (.632) in doubles action as a team this season following Friday's action. The Spartans have a combined .790 (109-29) winning percentage in singles matches, and a .696 (48-21) doubles winning percentage in dual matches.
