No. 3 CWRU Takes Two of Three Matches on Thursday

The third-ranked Case Western Reserve University men's tennis team won two of its three matches on Thursday afternoon, besting Piedmont College 6-1 at the USTA National Campus in Orlando, Florida, while besting 36th-ranked Southwestern University 7-0 and falling to 15th-ranked WashU 4-3 in Georgetown, Texas.

The Spartans ended the day with a 17-4 overall record. CWRU handed Southwestern its first loss of the campaign, as the Pirates fell to 6-1 for the year, while Piedmont dropped to 5-6. WashU improved to 4-4 with the win.

CWRU also played an exhibition match against 35th-ranked Skidmore College in Altamonte Springs, Florida, winning 4-3.

  • The Spartans finished the day with a 19-5 record in singles matches and a 4-8 record in doubles play.

  • Sophomores Jon Totorica and Rowan Matorin each went 2-0 in singles play during the matches in Texas, while sophomore Rohit Jain and first-year Xander Jhaveri were both 2-0 in singles matches in Florida on Thursday.

  • Junior Santiago Salazar Garza bested Southwestern's Nathan Qi, ranked 43rd in Division III, at no. 1 singles to improve to a team-best 18-5 in singles matches this season.

  • With his two wins on Thursday, Jain improved to 11-0 this season in singles matches.

  • Including the fall, CWRU stands at 208-79 (.725) in singles play and 83-47 (.638) in doubles action as a team this season. The Spartans have a combined .786 (99-27) winning percentage in singles matches, and a .714 (45-18) doubles winning percentage in dual matches.

  • CWRU now stands at 7-9 all-time against WashU. Despite the loss on Thursday, the Spartans have won five of the last seven meetings with the Bears.

  • The Spartans stand at 2-0 all-time against Piedmont.

  • Thursday was the second meeting all-time between CWRU and Southwestern, with the Spartans improving to 2-0 in the matchup.
