#3 Men’s Tennis Falls to #14 Trinity, Bests Dickinson, on Wednesday

The third-ranked Case Western Reserve University men's tennis team continued play on its spring break trip on Wednesday, falling 4-3 to 14th-ranked Trinity University in San Antonio, Texas, while besting Dickinson College 7-0 in Altamonte Springs, Florida.

CWRU also played an exhibition match against North Central College on Wednesday in Altamonte Springs, winning 7-0 over the Cardinals.

CWRU now stands at 15-3 overall for the season, while Trinity improved to 5-3 and Dickinson dropped to 1-8.

Stats and Standouts


  • CWRU finished the day 8-1 in doubles matches and 14-4 in singles contests. 

  • Despite falling to Trinity, the Spartans picked up two wins over ranked opponents during the match, as unranked junior Santiago Salazar Garza bested 16th-ranked Kishan Kersten 7-5, 6-2 in the no. 1 singles match, while 17th-ranked graduate student Bryce Ware and junior Trey Lambright defeated 23rd-ranked Jared Perry and Kersten 6-1 at no. 1 doubles.

  • Seniors Rohan Bhat and Anmay Devaraj clinched the doubles point in the match for the Spartans with a 6-3 win at no. 3 doubles.

  • Bhat also won his match at no. 5 singles for CWRU. Four of the six singles matches against Trinity went to three sets.

  • First-year Xander Jhaveri won a pair of singles matches in Altamonte Springs, while 10 other Spartans claimed a singles victory during the day,

  • Salazar Garza improved to a team-best 17-4 in singles matches this season, including a 9-2 mark in the spring and an 8-2 record in no. 1 singles matches.

  • CWRU has won the doubles point in each of its last seven matches and in 17 of its 18 matches overall this spring.

  • The Spartans' 7-0 win over Dickinson was their 10th sweep through 18 dual matches.

  • Including the fall, CWRU stands at 189-74 (.719) in singles play and 79-39 (.669) in doubles action as a team this season following Wednesday's action. The Spartans have a combined .778 (84-24) winning percentage in singles matches, and a .778 (42-12) doubles winning percentage in dual matches.

  • The Spartans improved to 2-0 all-time against Dickinson, including an 8-1 win in 2019.

  • CWRU saw a stretch of three-straight wins against Trinity come to a close, as the team fell to 4-5 all-time against the Tigers.

The Spartans will be back in action on Thursday with four more matches. In Georgetown, Texas, CWRU will take on a pair of nationally-ranked teams in no. 15 WashU at 11:00 a.m. ET and 36th-ranked Southwestern University at 3:00 p.m. ET, while in Florida, the Spartans will take on Piedmont University at 7:30 a.m. at the USTA National Campus in Orlando, before playing an exhibition against 35th-ranked Skidmore College at 12:30 p.m. at the Winter Park Racquet Club in Winter Park.
