#3 Men’s Tennis Opens Spring Break Trip with Three Wins

The third-ranked Case Western Reserve University men's tennis team opened play on its spring break trip on Tuesday with three wins, claiming a 6-1 victory over Division II St. Mary's University in San Antonio, Texas, and claiming a 7-0 win over East Texas Baptist University and a 5-2 win against Covenant College in Orlando, Florida.

The Spartans now stand at 14-2 for the season, while St. Mary's dropped to 9-2, East Texas Baptist fell to 6-5, and Covenant moved to 7-4.

Stats and Standouts


  • The Spartans finished the day 6-3 in doubles matches and 15-3 in singles contests.

  • Junior Santiago Salazar Garza won his no. 1 singles match against St. Mary's Lucas Castillo Sanchez, the 40th-ranked player in Division II.

  • Sophomore Rowan Matorin provided the clincher at no. 5 singles for the Spartans in their match against the Rattlers, while senior Matthew Plunkett (no. 2), sophomore Jon Totorica (no. 3), and senior Josh Davydov (no. 6 singles) also had singles wins in the match.

  • CWRU secured the doubles point against St. Mary's with a win from graduate student Bryce Ware and junior Trey Lambright at no. 1 doubles, and the clinching victory from seniors Rohan Bhat and Anmay Devaraj at no. 3 doubles.

  • 10 different Spartans won a singles match during the team's two contests in Orlando on Tuesday.

  • First-year Shay Gupta highlighted the team's performance against the Tigers and the Scots, winning a doubles match in each contest, and claiming a three-set win at no. 3 singles against Covenant.

  • The Spartans' 7-0 win over East Texas Baptist was their ninth sweep through 16 dual matches.
