Men’s Tennis Racks Up Wins at Two Weekend Tournaments

The Case Western Reserve University men's tennis team continued its fall season this past weekend, participating in the three-day Everybody vs. Cancer Invitational, hosted by the University of Toledo in Toledo, Ohio, and the Blue and Gold Invitational at Allegheny College in Meadville, Pennsylvania, on Saturday.

  • CWRU players registered a combined singles record of 23-14 (.662) and a doubles mark of 11-4 (.733) at the three-day event.

  • Competing for the Spartans at the event were graduate student Bryce Ware, seniors JT Bilski, Josh Davydov, and Matthew Plunkett, juniors George Kosseifi, Santiago Salazar Garza, and Derek Shiffer, and sophomores Leon Chen, Rowan Matorin, and Jon Totorica.

  • The format of the competition was a round robin for singles play with a single-elimination doubles draw.

  • Other teams in action at the event included NCAA Division I Toledo and Youngstown State, Division II Tiffin and Wayne State, Division III Chicago, and NAIA Holy Cross College (Indiana).

  • Two CWRU players went undefeated in singles play during the weekend, with Chen and Davydov each going 4-0. Salazar Garza and Totorica both registered a 3-1 mark over the course of the event. Nine players notched at least one singles win in Toledo.

  • Totorica and Chen had a strong showing in doubles play as well, going 3-0 at the event. Salazar Garza and Matorin also paired up to walk away with three wins in as many matches over the weekend. Both duos of Bilski and Kosseifi and Davydov and Ware went 2-1.

Blue and Gold Invitational


  • CWRU went a combined 21-2 in singles matches and 12-0 in doubles contests during the day.

  • Competing on Saturday for the Spartans were seniors Rohan Bhat and Justin Prochnow, junior Trey Lambright, sophomores Rohit Jain, Konrad Kwiatkowski, and Luke Saylor, and first-years Benjamin Fernandez, Shay Gupta, Ethan Jacob, Xander Jhaveri, Marko McRae, Glen Ngo, and Nikhil Ramani.

  • The Spartans and the Gators competed in a round-robin format between the two teams.

  • Among the Spartans to go 2-0 in singles play at the Blue and Gold Invitational were Fernandez, Gupta, Jacob, Jain, Jhaveri, Lambright, Ngo, Ramani, and Saylor. Twelve different CWRU players won at least one singles match.

  • Going 2-0 in doubles contests were the duos of Bhat and Jain, Lambright and Prochnow, Jacob and Jhaveri, Gupta and Ramani, and Fernandez and Ngo. Saylor also walked away from the event with a pair of doubles wins, one with Kwiatkowski as a partner and the other with McRae.

Spartan Notes


  • Plunkett earned the 50th win of his singles career on Saturday with a three-set win against Youngstown State's Rafael Le Fur. He stands at 50-13 for his career and is eighth all-time in program history with a .794 career singles winning percentage.

  • CWRU has opened its 2025-26 campaign with an 86-38 (.694) record in singles play and a 35-17 (.673) mark in doubles play over the first two weekends of the season.

  • With his four singles wins, Davydov has a team-high seven singles victories this season and stands at 7-1. Chen and Salazar Garza are each 6-1, while Fernandez, Jacob, and Jain remain undefeated with 5-0 singles records.

The Spartans will now turn their attention to the ITA Fall Regional Championship, hosted by Kalamazoo College in Kalamazoo, Michigan, from Friday, September 26 to Monday, September 29, as the team's top players will vie against the other squads in the region to win the singles and doubles championships. In addition, CWRU will also send a contingent of competitors to the Big Red Invitational on September 27 and 28 at Denison University in Granville, Ohio.
