CWRU Swim Dive Teams Sweep Ashland, Place Second at Kenyon Relays

The Case Western Reserve University men's and women's swimming and diving teams swept Ashland in a dual meet at the Messerly Natatorium in Ashland, Ohio, and placed second at the Kenyon Relays at the Steen Aquatic Center in Gambier, Ohio, on Saturday.

Both Spartan teams improved to 1-0 in dual meets this season, while both Eagle teams fell to 0-2 overall. At Kenyon, the Spartan men's team placed second with 79 points, and the women's team finished second with 85 points.

In Ashland, Case Western Reserve won 24 events. Junior William Froass helped the team win four events, including two relays. The 200 Medley Relay of Froass, juniors Julian Kim and Mason Bencurik, and first-year Edward Steward placed first in 1:34.95. In addition, Froass teamed with Bencurik and juniors Ben Borvendeg and Zach Halsey to win the 200 Free Relay with a time of 1:26.52. Individually, Froass claimed the 100 Back in 52.34 and 200 Back in 1:57.08. Bencurik and Steward each placed first in a pair of events. Bencurik won the 100 and 200 Free races in 46.92 and 1:43.76, and Steward touched the wall first in the 100 Fly (52.64) and 200 Fly (1:57.86).

Kim and first-year Edgar Rutkauskas tied for the win in the 100 Breast with each registering a time of 59.94 seconds in the event. Rutkauskas added a victory in the 200 IM in 1:59.86, and Borvendeg finished the 50 Free in 22.10 seconds.

Junior John Drumm (500 Free, 4:51.78) and first-year Sam Schultz (1000 Free, 10:16.96) each won distance free events for the Spartans. In the 200 Breast, junior Spencer Ahten was the first to touch the wall at 2:12.37.

For the CWRU women's team at Ashland, junior Claire Kozma finished first in four different events. Individually, she won the 50 Free in 24.61 and 100 Fly in 58.47. She joined juniors Julia Cho and Eliza Dixon and first-year Sayjel Tan for the 200 Medley Relay, finishing in 1:50.34, and Dixon, Cho, and first-year Marina Oria for the 200 Free Relay with a time of 1:40.85. Tan (100 Back, 1:0.87) and Cho (100 Breast, 1:11.68) both added individual wins for CWRU.

Sophomore Ava Ellis claimed a pair of events for the Spartans, winning the 200 Breast in 2:34.15 and the 200 IM in 2:17.65.

In freestyle events, sophomore Lauren Valentine touched the wall first in the 1000 Free with a time of 11:19.11, and sophomore Maggie Rose Rook placed first in the 200 Free in 2:01.45.

At Kenyon College, the CWRU women's team won one event, placed second in another, and added three third-place finishes. On the boards, senior Jocelyn Schechter won the three-meter dive with a score of 272.85 and was the runner-up in the 1-meter dive with a score of 255.45.

The 3x500 Free Relay of seniors Selah Dean, Angeli Paull, and Adriana Kamor placed second in 16:28.11. Placing third in the 200 Fly Relay with a time of 1:49.34 were seniors Nara Lee, Simone Vale, Kate Menzer, and Erin Quinlan. Menzer and Vale paired with seniors Kelly Vann and Gabriella Chambers for the 200 Free Relay, placing third in 1:40.04. Dean added a third-place finish in the 400 IM Relay in 4:21.08 with seniors Caroline Schlessman, Erica Rice, and Madison McDaniels.

For the men's team, senior Alex Waltman won the 3-meter dive with a score of 275.40. The Spartans had a trio of third-place finishes in swimming events. Seniors senior Ben Zuo, Zach Toothman, Kevin Hu, and Michael Butler earned the bronze in the 200 Breast Relay in 1:53.38 and in the 400 IM Relay in 3:47.46. In the 3x500 Free Relay, seniors Griffin Gushman, Peter Meng, and Stephen Hogeman finished in 14:47.40 to place third.

Finally, the Case Western Reserve 200 Mixed Relay of Vale, Zuo, Hu, and Chambers placed second with a time of 1:42.01.

The Spartans will host their first meet of the season next Saturday, facing Ohio Wesleyan University at the Veale Natatorium on October 26.

  • CWRU sent only seniors and graduate students to the Kenyon Relays, while juniors, sophomores, and first-year students competed against Ashland
  • In the first Top 25 released by the CSCAA this season, the CWRU men's team ranked 16th in Division III and the CWRU women's team ranked 17th in DIII
