2023 CWRU Softball Season Recap

For the second consecutive season, the Case Western Reserve University softball team captured the University Athletic Association championship and reached the regional round of the NCAA Division III Softball Championship. The Spartans, who ranked as high as third in the NFCA coaches' poll during the regular season, finished the campaign with a record of 38-5, tying the program wins record set in 2018.

CWRU won the UAA for the sixth time in program history, going 17-2 in conference play. After starting the conference slate with just one win in three games at Emory, the Spartans swept their remaining four conference opponents, taking four games from WashU, Brandeis, Carnegie Mellon, and New York University. The team outscored its opponents 112-38 during the 19 games, allowing an earned run average of just 1.93. Sophomore pitcher Lexi Miskey won UAA Pitcher of the Year honors for the second consecutive season, and senior infielder Amanda Riely was named the conference's Position Player of the Year. Junior infielder KaiLi Gross and junior outfielder Kela Jagoda were also named to the All-UAA First Team, and sophomore pitcher Kylie Hosey each earned All-UAA Second Team honors. For the first time in league history, the conference champion received an automatic bid to the NCAA tournament, ensuring the Spartans their fourth all-time appearance in the postseason.

Case Western Reserve hosted one of the 15 four-team regionals of the 62-team NCAA Championship at Mather Park. The Spartans, seeded first, defeated fourth-seeded Penn State Altoona 15-1 in five innings on the first day of competition. However, the team fell to Hiram 7-2 on the next day and ended its season with a 3-2 loss to Mount Union in an elimination game. Miskey and first-year catcher Anna Gobeyn (six-for-eight, run, double, run batted in) were named to the All-Tournament Team.

Miskey had a record-setting second season with CWRU, earning NFCA All-America Second Team and All-Region First Team honors. She set single-season program records for wins (23), strikeouts (207), strikeout rate (9.64 per seven innings), and lowest opponent batting average (.160). Miskey added one save (against NYU on April 22) and completed nine games, totaling 150 and one-third innings. She recorded a season-high 12 strikeouts in a 3-2 win over WashU on March 31 and eclipsed double-digit strikeouts six times. Miskey was also used as a pinch runner, stealing nine bases on 10 attempts and scoring seven runs.

Riely had a career year in her final season as a Spartan, earning NFCA All-America Third Team and All-Region First Team honors. She started all 43 games for the team at second base, hitting .418 with a .447 on-base percentage and .597 slugging percentage. Riely led the team in batting average, on-base percentage, hits (56), and runs batted in (35). She slugged three home runs, 11 doubles, and two triples, adding 32 runs scored. Defensively, Riely was a stalwart at the keystone, recording 86 putouts and 37 assists for a .953 fielding percentage.

Senior outfielder Carli Tucci was also named to the NFCA All-Region First Team following her best campaign in CWRU Blue. Appearing in every game and starting all but two contests, Tucci hit .337 with a team-high six home runs, driving in 29. She compiled nine doubles, 34 runs scored, and 10 steals with an on-base percentage of .443 and slugging percentage of .596.

Gross, who was named to the All-UAA First Team for the second straight season and earned her third career All-UAA honors, started all 43 games at shortstop for the Spartans during her junior year. She tied for the team lead in hits (56) and led the squad in doubles (13), triples (seven), runs scored (48), and slugging percentage (.642). Gross stole 32 bases without getting caught, the second-highest total in program history, and set a single-season program record with her seven triples. For the season, she had a .378 batting average and .429 on-base percentage, hitting primarily out of the leadoff spot, adding four home runs and 34 runs batted in.

Jagoda earned NFCA All-Region Second Team honors in a bounce back junior season. Starting every game in center field for the Spartans, Jagoda stole 27 bases on 34 attempts, the fourth-highest total in program history. At the plate, she had a .326 batting average, .375 on-base percentage, and .424 slugging percentage. Jagoda scored 32 runs, had 26 runs driven in, and added five doubles and four triples. Against Brandeis on April 7, Jagoda recorded a season-high four hits, the first CWRU four-hit game since May 2021. She did not commit an error in the outfield, logging 42 putouts and one assist.

Hosey, an NFCA All-Region Third Team selection, appeared in 24 games in the circle and made 16 starts. She went 14-2 with a 1.59 ERA, the third-lowest mark in program history, in 97 innings. Hosey tossed four complete games and two shutouts, while adding three saves as a relief pitcher. She compiled 79 strikeouts and limited opponents to a .243 batting average.

Junior pitcher Jenna Jaklich tied the single-season program record with four saves, finishing the season with a record of 1-0 and a 2.36 ERA in 29 and two-third innings. The Spartan pitching staff set six team program records during the season including lowest ERA (1.67), lowest opponents' batting average (.195), highest strikeout rate (7.70), most shutouts (13), most strikeouts (309), and highest fielding percentage (.966).

After starting the campaign with a program record 14 consecutive wins, CWRU won 20 straight contests from March 31-May 7. The team went 11-0 at Mather Park in the regular season.

Head Coach Josie Henry and Assistant Coaches Joe Angelo, Ashley Parello, Sidney Brannam, Melissa Cuellar, Nicole Doyle, and Hope Yashnik earned UAA Coaching Staff of the Year honors for the second straight season. Henry, who won her 300th game during the season, finished the campaign with a career record of 331-170 (.661) after the team recorded its 12th consecutive winning season.

In addition to the team's success on the diamond, the Spartans were successful in the classroom. Gross was named a CSC Academic All-American for the second straight season, just the second player in program history to earn the honor multiple times. Four members of the team—Gross, Hosey, Miskey, and Riely—earned Academic All-District honors, and an additional nine members of the team—junior Savannah Gazda, Jagoda, sophomore Katelyn Lamm, junior Jordon Manworren, junior Kaila Nutter, junior Stevie Rieger, sophomore Isabella Russo, and junior Abbey Rzeszutko —received UAA All-Academic recognition.
