Josie Henry

Josie Henry completed her 15th season at Case Western Reserve in 2025. Formerly an assistant coach at Division I Cleveland State University, Henry continues to lead a remarkable turnaround for the program since being named to her post during the summer of 2010. 

Under Henry’s tutelage, the Spartans have totaled an overall mark of 401-191 (.677) in her 15 years, making her the winningest coach in the program's history.

CWRU hosted an NCAA Regional for the fourth consecutive year in 2025 with the Spartans qualifying for the postseason for the fifth time under Henry. The squad reached the final of the regional and completed the season with an record of 30-12. Henry earned her 400th career victory with a 10-2 win over Lebanon Valley at the regional, and she mentored the third UAA Position Player of the Year in a row for the team, senior Katelyn Lamm. Graduate student KaiLi Gross received the program's fourth-ever NFCA All-America First Team honor with her and senior pitcher Lexi Miskey becoming the school's first-ever four-time All-UAA First Team selections.  

In 2024, Henry guided the Spartans to the finals of the NCAA Championship for the second time in program history, with the squad tying for seventh nationally. The team set a program record with 40 wins during the campaign, going 40-9 during the season, and won its third UAA championship in a row with a 16-4 mark in conference play. The Spartans swept the UAA Player of the Year Awards, as junior Lexi Miskey (Pitcher), senior Stevie Rieger (Position Player), and first-year Karen Potts (Rookie) were recognized. Miskey earned her second career All-America honors from the NFCA after setting program single-season and career records for wins and strikeouts.

The Spartans won their second consecutive University Athletic Association championship in 2023 after going 17-2 in conference play. CWRU, which tied a program record with 38 wins and went 38-5 overall during the season, reached the Region Round of the 2023 NCAA Division III Softball Championship for the second season in a row. The UAA Championship was the sixth in program history and the postseason appearance was fourth all-time, with three coming during Henry's time in charge of the program. The Spartans ranked as high as third in the NFCA coaches poll and set a program record with a 20-game winning streak during the campaign. Sophomore Lexi Miskey (the UAA Pitcher of the Year) and senior Amanda Riely (the UAA Position Player of the Year) each earned All-America honors from the NFCA following the season.

In the 2022 season, the Spartans reached the postseason for the third time in program history, and second under Henry, advancing to the Super Regional Round of the 2022 NCAA Division III Softball Championship. CWRU finished the season with a record of 30-12, including a then-program-best 16-3 mark in UAA games. The Spartans captured their first UAA title since 2014 and first outright title since 1999. CWRU was ranked 13th in the final NFCA poll of the season.

During the 2021 season, the Spartans recorded their 10th-consecutive winning season, finishing the campaign with a record of 27-9. CWRU went 17-1 in games at Mather Park to improve to 96-31 over the last 10 seasons (good for a .755 winning percentage). In addition, Henry guided shortstop Sarah Miller NFCA All-America First Team honors as she became just the third player in the program's history to earn All-America honors and the first since former Spartan Annie Wennerberg received first-team honors during the 2015 season.

In 2020, the team recorded its ninth-consecutive winning season as they finished the campaign with an overall record of 6-4 before the season was cut short due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

During the 2019 season, the Spartans recorded their eighth-consecutive winning season, finishing the campaign with an overall record of 25-13. CWRU went 15-5 in non-conference games during the year, while also going 12-7 in games at Mather Park to improve to 79-30 over the last eight seasons (good for a .725 winning percentage).

In 2018, the team recorded its most successful season in program history, as they finished the campaign with a program-best 38-12 overall record and finished tied for fifth at the 2018 NCAA Division III Softball Championships. The Spartans qualified for the NCAA Division III Tournament for the only the second time in program history during the campaign, and made its' first-ever appearance in the finals round of the NCAA Championships. CWRU finished tied for fifth at the championships, which, at the time, was the highest national finish for any team in Case Western Reserve University athletics history. CWRU finished the year ranked sixth in the final National Fastpitch Coaches Association Division III Top-25 Poll, a 16-spot improvement on their ranking from earlier in the regular season when they checked in at 22nd in the national rankings. This is the highest the team has ever been ranked in the NFCA's final poll of the year. The NFCA has issued a top-25 since the start of the 1995 season.

During the 2017 season, Henry coached the Spartans to a 20-17 record, their sixth-consecutive winning season. CWRU went 13-11 in non-conference games during the year, while also going 11-9 in games at Mather Park to improve to 58-22 over the last six seasons (good for a .725 winning percentage.

In 2016, the Spartans recorded their fifth-consecutive winning season, finishing the campaign with an overall record of 21-19. CWRU went 19-11 in non-conference games during the year, while also exerting its home field advantage, going 8-2 in games at Mather Park to improve to 47-13 at home over the last five seasons (good for a .783 winning percentage).

During the 2015 season, Henry coached the Spartans to a 32-11 record, setting a new program-high mark for victories in a season. Henry mentored All-America First Team pitcher/ outfielder Annie Wennerberg, who was the Division III leader in home runs and the UAA Co-Player of the Year, and the UAA Rookie of the Year Katie Wede.

During the 2014 campaign of Henry’s tenure, the Spartans (25-15) claimed a share of the program’s first UAA Championship since 1999. The team produced three NFCA All-Central Region selections, five All-UAA honorees and the first Capital One Academic All-American® in program history (senior shortstop Makenzie Lein). For their efforts, Henry and her assistants were named the UAA Softball Coaching Staff of the Year.

In 2013, the Spartans finished as one of the nation’s hottest teams with 11 straight wins and 15 victories in their final 16 games overall. The program earned the No. 6 spot in the final NCAA Central Region rankings for the second year in a row and tied a program best with six All-UAA selections. 

The year prior, Henry guided the Spartans to the second most victories (26) in school single-season history and a seven-win improvement over the 2011 campaign. The Spartan win total was also a 17-win improvement over the team's tally from 2010 – the last season prior to Henry’s hiring.

In her first season (2011) at the helm of the program, Henry led her team to a 13-5 record over the final 18 games, while then junior Lauren Wolz became the first NFCA All-American in program history.

Prior to assuming the reigns at Case Western Reserve, Henry spent four years as an assistant at CSU, working primarily with the Viking pitchers in addition to assisting with recruiting and coordinating community service efforts. She helped CSU to four consecutive 30-win seasons and four straight trips to the Horizon League Championship game. She also served an integral role during the Vikings’ first-ever Horizon League Championship during the 2009 campaign.

Prior to her time at CSU, Henry was a graduate assistant at Minnesota State University, Mankato, where she coached the pitchers and outfielders.

As a player, Henry was an All-American pitcher at Division II Ashland University and a College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) Academic All-District selection. She graduated in 2004 as the Eagles’ career leader in earned run average (1.11), strikeouts (1,109), innings pitched (792.1) and complete games (99). Her career ratio of 10.2 strikeouts per seven innings ranked fourth all-time in NCAA Division II.

A native of Jordan, Minnesota, Henry earned her bachelor’s degree in recreation sports industry from Ashland and her master’s degree in sports administration from Minnesota State University, Mankato in 2006.

A certified Strength & Conditioning Specialist through the National Strength & Conditioning Association, Henry also serves as co-head coach for Case Western Reserve's strength & conditioning program.

She resides in Medina with her husband, Geoff, and their children, Delaney, Kendall and Garrison.
