No. 21/23 Wrestling Extends Winning Streak to Seven at UAA Challenge

The 21st-ranked Case Western Reserve University wrestling team won all three of its matches at the 2026 University Athletic Association Challenge to extend its winning streak to seven matches. CWRU defeated Centenary University 31-9, Gettysburg College 25-17, and Johns Hopkins University 27-16 at the John A. Paulson Center on the campus of New York University  in Manhattan, New York on Saturday.

The Spartans improved to 8-2 in dual matches this season, while the Cyclones fell to 5-5, the Bullets dropped to 1-4, and the Blue Jays moved to 0-4.

Stats and Standouts


  • Four Spartans won all three of their matches at the duals: senior Art Martinez (133 pounds), first-year Hunter Keane (141 pounds), senior Thomas Wagner (157 pounds), and senior Aidan Gassel (197 pounds)
  • Martinez won twice by technical fall and pinned a third opponent
  • Keane recorded a tech fall and a pin
  • Gassel secured a victory by technical fall

  • Martinez gave the Spartans a 5-4 lead with a 20-5 technical fall over Mason Johnson in 5:07
  • Keane followed with a second period pin of Danny Haws
  • After a tech fall cut into the deficit, CWRU won the remaining six matches to take the dual
  • Wagner, Gassel, senior Marty Landes (165 pounds), and first-year Alexander Goldman (285 pounds) won by decision
  • Sophomore Chase Crutchley (174 pounds) and junior Mathew Gummere (184 pounds) contributed bonus points with major decisions

  • CWRU opened the dual with wins in four of the first five bouts to take a 16-4 lead
  • Senior E.J. Alizio picked up a 3-1 decision at 125 pounds, followed by a pin in 6:43 by Martinez
  • Keane secured a major decision, and Wagner won a tight 5-4 decision to put the Spartans ahead by 12
  • Gettysburg won the next two bouts, picking up seven points to cut the deficit to five
  • Gummere shut out Joe Dietz 12-0 to give the Spartans a nine-point lead, and Gassel won the match with a 19-4 technical fall in 5:23

  • The Spartans did well again at the lighter weights, winning four of the first five bouts
  • Martinez and Keane both had technical falls over Blue Jays, and Alizio won by forfeit
  • After Wagner won by decision, 4-2, over Giorgio Difalco, Case Western Reserve led 19-4 in the match
  • JHU cut the deficit to nine, but major decisions by Crutchley and Gassel clinched the victory for the Spartans

Spartan Notes


  • Senior John Conover added a win at 157 pounds in an exhibition match
  • The Spartans were ranked 21st in the national dual rankings and 23rd in the national tournament rankings by the NWCA on December 31. It was their first-ever ranking in either national poll
  • With his three wins, Martinez broke a tie for fifth in career wins in program history, increasing his career victory total to 124. Ranked second nationally, Martinez leads the squad with eight technical falls during the 2025-26 season
  • Keane increased his team lead in victories to 21, improving to 21-5 in his debut season for the Spartans. He has six pins and three technical falls
  • Wagner, ranked fourth in the region in his weight class, improved to 18-5 during the campaign with three pins and four technical falls
  • Gassel's technical fall was his second of the season. He was ranked 11th nationally at 197 pounds
