Six members of the Case Western Reserve University wrestling team received Scholar All-America honors from the National Wrestling Coaches Association, the organization announced in mid-March.
Seniors Marty Landes, Art Martinez, and Thomas Wagner, junior Mathew Gummere, sophomore Chase Crutchley, and first-year Alexander Goldman were all recognized for their achievements on the mat and in the classroom.
To earn Scholar All-America honors, wrestlers must either place in the top eight at regional tournaments or win at least two-thirds of their matches (minimum 15 matches wrestled). Academically, student-athletes needed an average grade point average of at least 3.2 over the prior two semesters or a cumulative GPA of at least 3.2. A total of 473 student-athletes representing 105 institutions were recognized by the NWCA in 2026.
Landes, who is earning his first career Scholar All-America honor, placed eighth in the region at 165 pounds. He went 22-16 (.579) this season at the weight class, pinning one opponent and leading the team with 12 technical falls. Across four seasons, he had a 76-62 record (.551) at 157 and 165 pounds, recording 11 pins and 31 technical falls. Landes is a biology major on the pre-medicine track with a 3.835 cumulative GPA.
Martinez became the program's first All-American in 14 seasons with his sixth-place finish at 133 pounds at the 2026 NCAA Division III Men's Wrestling Championship. Martinez, who is a four-time NWCA Scholar All-American, finished the season with a 36-7 (.837) record at the weight class, earning 11 pins and 10 technical falls. In four seasons, he had the second-most career victories in program history, going 140-39 (.782) with 43 pins and 34 technical falls at 133 and 141 pounds. Martinez is a political science major with a 3.881 cumulative GPA.
Wagner, a three-time NWCA Scholar All-America honoree, qualified for the national championship for the first time in his career by placing third at 157 pounds at the regional tournament. He went 38-10 (.792) this season with 13 pins and seven technical falls, ending his career with an overall record of 96-52 (.649) at 149 and 157 pounds. Wagner is a finance major with a 3.579 cumulative GPA.
Gummere punched his first ticket to the national championship by placing third at the regional tournament at 184 pounds. He finished the year with a record of 29-19 (.604) with eight pins and two technical falls. In his three years as a Spartan, Gummere has 75 wins and an overall record of 75-57 (.568) totaling 22 pins and seven technical falls. He is an engineering physics major with a 3.338 cumulative GPA, earning his first career Scholar All-America honor.
Crutchley is receiving NWCA Scholar All-America honors for the second time in his career after placing fourth at 174 pounds at the regional tournament. This season, he went 32-16 (.667) with two pins and five technical falls. Across two years of collegiate wrestling, Crutchley is 54-26 (.675) with two pins and 12 technical falls. He is a nutritional biochemistry major with a cumulative GPA of 3.698.
Goldman, who placed seventh at 285 pounds in the region, completed his first season of collegiate wrestling with a record of 19-15 (.559). He competed at both 197 and 285 pounds, totaling three pins and three technical falls. Goldman is majoring in economics and has a 3.250 cumulative GPA.
As a team, Case Western Reserve had the 17th-highest grade point average among Division III schools with a team GPA of 3.6303.
The Spartans completed a historic season in 2026, qualifying three wrestlers for the national meet for the first time in 23 years. CWRU placed 35th out of 71 teams with 11.0 points.
