Case Western Reserve University senior Art Martinez of the wrestling team was named to the College Sports Communicators Academic All-America Men's At-Large Second Team, which was announced on Wednesday.
It is the first Academic All-America honor for Martinez, who becomes just the third Spartan wrestler honored on the national level by the CSC. Jacob Kornblatt was named to the Second Team in 2010, and Gregory Hanchin received Second Team honors in 1988 and 1989 and a Third Team selection in 1987. The men's at-large teams consist of student-athletes from the following sports: fencing, golf, gymnastics, ice hockey, lacrosse, rifle, skiing, volleyball, water polo, and wrestling.
Martinez is the ninth CWRU student-athlete this year to earn Academic All-America acclaim. Since the inception of the program, 133 CWRU student-athletes have earned 195 Academic All-America selections, including 62 over the last four academic years.Â
Martinez became the program's first All-American in 14 seasons with his sixth-place finish at 133 pounds at the 2026 NCAA Division III Men's Wrestling Championship. A four-time NWCA Scholar All-American and three-time CSC Academic All-District selection, he finished the season with a 36-7 (.837) record at the weight class, earning 11 pins and 10 technical falls. Martinez was named the Most Outstanding Wrestler at the University Athletic Association Championship in February and earned All-UAA honors for the first time in his career. In four seasons, he had the second-most career victories in program history, going 140-39 (.782) with 43 pins and 34 technical falls at 133 and 141 pounds. Martinez graduated from CWRU with a degree in political science and a 3.895 cumulative GPA.
The 2025-26 Academic All-America Men's At-Large Teams, selected by CSC, recognize the nation's top student-athletes for their combined performances in competition and in the classroom. The CSC Academic All-America program separately recognizes At-Large honorees in five divisions — NCAA Division I, NCAA Division II, NCAA Division III, NAIA, and the College Division.
The Division III CSC Academic All-America program is partially financially supported by the NCAA Division III national governance structure to assist CSC with handling the awards fulfillment aspects for the 2025-26 Division III Academic All-America programs.
The Spartans completed a historic season in 2026, qualifying three wrestlers for the national meet for the first time in 23 years. CWRU placed 35th nationally out of 71 teams with 11.0 points.
