Six from CWRU Wrestling Named to CSC Academic All-District Team

Six members of the Case Western Reserve University wrestling team received Academic All-District honors from College Sports Communicators, the organization announced on Tuesday.

Seniors Marty Landes, Art Martinez, Justin Sweeney, and Thomas Wagner and sophomores Chase Crutchley and Robert Minden were all recognized for their achievements in the classroom and on the mat.

For wrestling, student-athletes who maintained at least a 3.50 cumulative grade point average as a sophomore academically and athletically and competed in at least 70 percent of matches with a team score or competed in their weight class at the conference championship were eligible for selection. Schools were limited to six nominations. The men's at-large teams consist of student-athletes from the following sports: fencing, golf, gymnastics, ice hockey, lacrosse, rifle, skiing, volleyball, water polo, and wrestling. Martinez will advance to the Academic All-America Men's At-Large ballot, with three teams of Division III Academic All-Americans released on Wednesday, July 8.

Landes placed eighth in the region at 165 pounds, going 22-16 (.579) this season at the weight class, with one pin and a team-high 12 technical falls. Across four seasons, he had a 76-62 record (.551) at 157 and 165 pounds, recording 11 pins and 31 technical falls. Landes graduated with a degree in biology with a 3.826 cumulative GPA. This is his second career Academic All-District honor.

Martinez became the program's first All-American in 14 seasons with his sixth-place finish at 133 pounds at the 2026 NCAA Division III Men's Wrestling Championship. Martinez, who is a four-time NWCA Scholar All-American and three-time CSC Academic All-District selection, finished the season with a 36-7 (.837) record at the weight class, earning 11 pins and 10 technical falls. He was named the Most Outstanding Wrestler at the University Athletic Association Championship in February and earned All-UAA honors for the first time in his career. In four seasons, he had the second-most career victories in program history, going 140-39 (.782) with 43 pins and 34 technical falls at 133 and 141 pounds. Martinez graduated from CWRU with a degree in political science and a 3.895 cumulative GPA.

Sweeney went 10-11 during his final season as a Spartan, competing exclusively at 165 pounds. He represented CWRU at the conference championship meet and placed at two tournaments during the year. In four seasons on the mat, Sweeney won 33 matches across five different weight classes, pinning five opponents and securing five wins by technical fall. He graduated with a degree in economics and a cumulative GPA of 3.612. This is his first career Academic All-District honor.

Wagner, a three-time NWCA Scholar All-America honoree, qualified for the national championship for the first time in his career by placing third at 157 pounds at the regional tournament. He went 38-10 (.792) this season with 13 pins and seven technical falls, ending his career with an overall record of 96-52 (.649) at 149 and 157 pounds. Wagner earned All-UAA honors this season after going 2-0 at the conference championship. He graduated with a degree in finance and a 3.613 cumulative GPA. This is his first career Academic All-District honor.

Crutchley, who is already a two-time NWCA Scholar All-American, placed fourth at 174 pounds at the regional tournament. This season, he went 32-16 (.667) with two pins and five technical falls. Across two years of collegiate wrestling, Crutchley is 54-26 (.675) with two pins and 12 technical falls. He is a nutritional biochemistry major with a cumulative GPA of 3.765. He received his first career Academic All-District honor.

Minden won 17 of his 34 matches at 149 pounds this year for the Spartans. He recorded five pins and two technical falls, placing at three tournaments during the campaign. His highest finish was fourth at the Tom Jarman Spartan Mat Classic on January 17. Minden has 29 victories in two seasons at CWRU with nine pins and two technical falls. Earning his first career Academic All-District honor, he is double majoring in business and finance with a 3.703 cumulative GPA.

The 2025-26 Academic All-District Men's At-Large Teams, selected by CSC, recognize the nation's top student-athletes for their combined performances in competition and in the classroom. The CSC Academic All-America program separately recognizes At-Large honorees in five divisions — NCAA Division I, NCAA Division II, NCAA Division III, NAIA, and the College Division.

The Division III CSC Academic All-America program is partially financially supported by the NCAA Division III national governance structure to assist CSC with handling the awards fulfillment aspects for the 2025-26 Division III Academic All-America programs.

The Spartans completed a historic season in 2026, qualifying three wrestlers for the national meet for the first time in 23 years. CWRU placed 35th nationally out of 71 teams with 11.0 points.
