The Case Western Reserve University wrestling team completed its best season in more than a decade during the 2025-26 season, sending three members to the 2026 NCAA Division III Men's Wrestling Championship and placing nationally for the first time in 14 years.

CWRU was represented by seniors Art Martinez and Thomas Wagner and junior Mathew Gummere at the national championship in Iowa in March. The program qualified for the meet for the first time since 2012 and sent three wrestlers for the first time since 2003. The Spartans finished 35th out of 71 teams with 11.0 points led by an All-America sixth-place finish from Martinez. It marked the first All-American for CWRU since 2012 and capped a stellar four-year career by the senior.

Martinez went 36-7 (.837) at 133 pounds during the 2025-26 campaign, including a 3-3 mark at the national championship. He won his first match in Iowa by sudden victory, defeating Chance Suddeth 4-1. After falling to the top-seeded wrestler in the bracket, he pinned Marvin Armistead in the consolation bracket to secure his place on the podium. On the second day, he held on for a 13-12 decision over Wyatt Unser, lost by sudden victory 7-4 in the consolation semifinal, and finished the competition with a loss in the fifth-place match to finish sixth nationally in the weight class. Over four years, Martinez went 140-39 (.782), the second-most wins in program history, with 43 pins and 34 wins by technical fall. He placed at the regional meet four times, finishing fifth and fourth at 141 pounds in 2023 and 2024, fourth at 133 pounds in 2025, and third this season.

Wagner (157 lbs.) and Gummere (184 lbs.) both reached the national championship by finishing third in their weight classes at the 2026 NCAA Division III Region V Tournament, hosted by John Carroll University. Wagner ended the season with a record of 38-10 (.792), including 13 pins and seven technical falls. Across four years, he went 96-52 (.649), placing three times at the regional meet with a fourth-place finish in 2025 and sixth-place finish in 2024. Gummere had a 29-19 (.604) record during the campaign with eight pins and two technical falls. In his three seasons as a Spartan, Gumme is 75-57 (.568) with 22 pins and seven technical falls.

In addition to Martinez, Wagner, and Gummere, five Spartans placed at the regional championship, leading the team to its best regional finish (tied for sixth) and most points at the tournament (106.0) since the last major change to the regional format in 2013. Sophomore Chase Crutchley finished fourth at 174 pounds, senior Aidan Gassel took sixth at 197 pounds, first-years Alexander Goldman (285 pounds) and Hunter Keane (141 pounds) placed seventh, and senior Marty Landes ended eighth at 165 pounds.

At the end of the season, 11 members of the team had picked up at least 20 victories and four won at least 30 matches, led by Keane who went 39-11. Crutchley had a 32-16 mark during his sophomore season. Senior E.J. Alizio won 28 matches at 125 pounds, including a team-leading 15 pins, and Landes paced the Spartans with 12 technical falls in his 22 victories. Gassel had a 21-11 record in his final year at CWRU, finishing his career with a 59-33 overall record. Sophomore Louka Babic (174 pounds), first-year Cole Rose (141 pounds), and sophomore Mike Valerino (141 pounds) all won exactly 20 bouts.

Earlier in the season, the Spartans placed third in the University Athletic Association at the conference championship in New York. Martinez and Wagner earned the first All-UAA honors of their careers and Martinez was named the Most Outstanding Wrestler of the Championship, the eighth Spartan to win the award in program history. The prior weekend, the squad won the John Summa Invitational for the first time in 39 years, and the team placed ninth at the historic Pete Willson Wheaton Invitational, its best finish in a generation at the meet.

The team went 11-4 in dual meets during the campaign, starting the season with a win over 23rd-ranked Adrian in November. After dropping their first two matches at the Yellow Jacket Duals, the squad won 10 consecutive matches, winning three duals over ranked foes at the Chocolate Duals in Pennsylvania, three duals at the UAA Challenge, and both matchups at the Claude Sharer Duals in Cleveland. CWRU won its 10th match in a row in near-perfect fashion, defeating Washington & Jefferson 50-0 on Senior Day in January.

In the classroom, six members of the team (Crutchley, Goldman, Gummere, Landes, Martinez, and Wagner) were honored as Scholar All-Americans by the NWCA with the team recording the 17th-highest grade point average among Division III schools. The Spartans also totaled 10 UAA All-Academic honors and six Academic All-District selections by the College Sports Communicators.
