Men’s Tennis Opens Fall Season at Two Weekend Competitions

The Case Western Reserve University men's tennis team opened its 2025 fall season at a pair of competitions this weekend, competing at the Youngstown State Invitational in Youngstown, Ohio, and the Denison Invitational in Granville, Ohio, on Saturday and Sunday.

YSU Invitational


  • The YSU Invitational format consisted of three singles draws and one doubles draw. Besides CWRU and Division II Youngstown State, other schools competing at the event included Division I Duquesne and Xavier, and Division II Edinboro.

  • Competing at the YSU Invitational for the Spartans were seniors JT Bilski and Justin Prochnow, junior George Kosseifi, sophomores Leon Chen, Jon Totorica, and Luke Saylor, and first-years Shay Gupta, Xander Jhaveri, Marko McRae, and Glen Ngo.

  • The Spartans totaled a 14-11 (.560) mark in singles matches and a 3-5 (.375) record in doubles play at Youngstown State.

  • Bilski and Totorica each went 2-1 in singles play and reached the quarterfinals of the 'A' draw at the event.

  • Chen also went 2-1 in singles matches and reached the semifinals of the 'B' draw.

  • Gupta made it to the finals of the 'C' draw before falling in the championship to Alex Woiten of Youngstown State, and finished with a 2-1 singles record.

  • Additional players with a 2-1 singles record included Jhaveri and Prochnow.

  • In doubles action, the pairings of Jhaveri and Gupta, Saylor and McRae, and Chen and Totorica each went 1-1.

Denison Invitational


  • The Denison Invitational featured a round-robin format. Other schools in action at the event included Denison, DePauw, Carnegie Mellon, and Kenyon.

  • In action for the Spartans at Denison were graduate student Bryce Ware, seniors Rohan Bhat, Josh Davydov, Anmay Devaraj, and Matthew Plunkett, juniors Trey Lambright, Santiago Salazar Garza, and Derek Shiffer, sophomores Rohit Jain and Rowan Matorin, and first-years Ben Fernandez, Ethan Jacob, and Nikhil Ramani.

  • CWRU players combined to go 29-11 (.725) in singles matches and 9-8 (.529) in doubles contests at Denison.

  • Five CWRU players - Fernandez, Jacob, Jain, Salazar Garza, and Shiffer - went 3-0 in singles matches at the event, while Davydov added a 3-1 singles record.

  • In doubles action, Lambright was a perfect 3-0, including a 2-0 mark with Ware.

Spartan Notes


  • Over the course of the two events, the Spartans went a combined 43-22 (.662) in singles matches and 12-13 (.480) in doubles contests during their opening weekend of play.

  • While they did not have an opportunity to compete against each other, Totorica was in the same singles and doubles draws at Youngstown State as his brother Kyle, who plays for Xavier.

The Spartans will be back in action next weekend at a pair of competitions, splitting the squad between the Everybody vs. Cancer Rocket Invite in Toledo, Ohio from Friday through Sunday and the Blue & Gold Invitational at Allegheny College in Meadville, Pennsylvania on Saturday.
