The Case Western Reserve University swimming teams ended the three-day Total Performance Invite with three school records at the Steen Aquatic Center in Gambier, Ohio, on Saturday.
Junior John Drumm set school, pool, and meet records with his time of 1:46.36 in the A Final of the 200 Fly while also recording an NCAA B Cut time. Drumm bested his own school record in the event of 1:47.11 set at last season's meet, and he bettered the pool and meet record of 1:46.43 set by Kenyon's Jon Zimdars on December 1, 2017.
In the final race of the day, Drumm teamed with junior Mason Bencurik, senior Peter Meng, and junior William Froass to set the school record in the 400 Free Relay with a B cut time of 3:01.16. Bencurik, Drumm, Meng, and Emil LaSida set the previous record of 3:01.49 at the 2024 University Athletic Association Championships. In the morning session, Bencurik swam a school-record time of 45.05 seconds in the 100 Free, besting LaSida's mark of 45.19 seconds. He placed third in the A Final in 45.07 seconds.
Meng had the CWRU men's team's other B cut time, finishing the 1650 Free in 15:46.72 to place third.
Froass was among the four additional Spartans who qualified for the A Finals in their events. The junior placed sixth in the 200 Back in 1:50.80. First-year Edgar Rutkauskas placed eighth in the 200 Breast in 2:03.05, and junior Adam Khatib and senior Kevin Hu finished seventh and eighth, respectively, with times of 1:52.47 and 1:52.51 in the 200 Fly. In the B Final of the same event, junior Joshua Hernandez finished 13th in 1:53.53 and first-year Edward Steward placed 20th in 1:57.87.
Three Case Western Reserve swimmers competed in the B Final of the 200 Back. Sophomore Michael Boelens placed 11th in 1:51.75, senior Griffin Gushman finished 19th in 1:56.49, and senior Zach Toothman was 20th in 1:56.59.
Junior Ben Borvendeg finished 16th in the 100 Free B Final in 46.40 seconds. In the 200 Breast B Final, first-year Sam Schultz placed 17th with a time of 2:05.00, and senior Jiro Batt was 20th with a time of 2:06.29
The women's 400 Free Relay of junior Claire Kozma, senior Angeli Paull, senior Kelly Vann, and senior Gabriella Chambers earned an NCAA B cut with a time of 3:27.70, placing fourth. Individually, Chambers, Kozma, and Paull all reached the A or B Finals of the 100 Free. Chambers had a B cut time in the A Final, finishing fifth in 51.17 seconds. In the B Final, Kozma was first to touch the wall at 51.65 seconds, finishing 11th, while Paull placed 16th in 52.49 seconds.
Three CWRU swimmers reached the A Final of the 200 Back. Senior Amelia Myhrvold placed fourth in 2:05.30, junior Lauren Valentine finished seventh with a time of 2:07.52, and senior Elishka Bailey touched the wall ninth at 2:10.27. Four members of the team placed in the top 20 in the 1650 Free including sophomore Ava Ellis (11th, 17:50.72), junior Lauren Valentine (14th, 18:14.15), sophomore Erin Butler (16th, 18:20.17), and senior Adriana Kamor (20th, 18:59.13).
Junior Kailyn Smith qualified for the B Final of the 200 Fly, placing 12th in 2:08.27.
The teams' divers traveled to Pittsburgh for the CMU Invite, hosted by Carnegie Mellon at the CMU Pool on Friday and Saturday. Senior Abigail Wilkov swept the boards, winning the 1-meter dive with a score of 483.92 and the 3-meter dive with a pool record score of 503.93. Senior Jocelyn Schechter placed second in the 3-meter dive (491.40) and third in the 1-meter dive (457.73). Both divers qualified for the NCAA Regional Championship in March with two scores. For the men's team, senior Nico Billoni won the 3-meter dive with a regional-qualifying score of 466.35 and placed third in the 1-meter dive with a score of 422.48. Sophomore Jack Rudofsky placed fourth in the event with a score of 361.22.
With the fall portion of their seasons complete, the CWRU swimming and diving teams will next host SUNY Geneseo on Saturday, January 18, 2025.
