CWRU Men's Tennis Collects Two Wins at Wittenberg on Saturday

The Case Western University men's tennis team picked up a pair of 9-0 wins against Wittenberg University at the Five Seasons Country Club in Dayton, Ohio on Saturday.

With the two wins, the Spartans improved to 5-1 overall, while Wittenberg dropped to 0-3 on the campaign.

Eleven different CWRU players picked up a singles win over the course of the two matches on Saturday, while ten players secured a doubles victory.

In the opening match of the day, senior Earl Hsieh and sophomore Diego Maza gave the Spartans the lead with an 8-1 win over Roy Jensen and Joe Patton at third doubles, while seniors Neil Mabee and Anthony Kanam extended the advantage with an 8-6 win at second doubles against Kyle Fout and Guille Del Rio Gonzalez. Sophomore James Hopper and senior Matthew Chen completed the doubles sweep with an 8-4 victory against John DeVito and Jake Stockhausen at no. 1 doubles.

Hopper scored the first point in singles play with 5-2 (ret.) win over DeVito, followed by a flawless 6-0, 6-0 win from junior Max Vicario against Del Rio Gonzalez to clinch the team win. Adding to the victory, senior Aris Jhaveri bested Patton 6-3, 6-0 at fourth singles, Hsieh topped Fout 6-1, 6-1 at fifth singles, Maza secured a 6-3, 6-1 win over Stockhausen at no. 2 singles, and sophomore Michael Sutanto claimed a 7-5, 6-2 win over Hayden Durant at sixth singles.

The doubles combination of senior Jonathan Powell and junior Chaitanya Aduru were the first to strike in the second match of the day, besting Durant and Patton 6-2 at no. 2 doubles. First-year Sahil Dayal and sophomore John Kasner added a 6-0 win over Nathan Baulch and Del Rio Gonzalez at third doubles, and Kanam and Mabee gave the Spartans a 3-0 lead with a 6-1 win over Stockhausen and Fout at no. 1 doubles.

Making his collegiate debut, first-year Daniel French claimed a quick 6-2, 6-0 win against Fout in the fourth singles match, while Dayal, also making his debut, bested Patton at no. 2 singles, 6-2, 6-0, to clinch CWRU's second victory of the day.

Sutanto went on to pick up his second singles win of the day, besting Del Rio Gonzalez 6-2, 6-0 at third singles, followed by a 6-1, 6-2 win for Powell at no. 1 singles over Stockhausen. Rounding out the victory, first-year Yuvraj Narang made his collegiate debut with a 6-1, 6-1 triumph over Durant at fifth singles, and Kasner beat Baulch 6-0, 6-0 at sixth singles for his first victory of the season.

The Spartans will be back in action next Saturday, April 3, when the team is scheduled to play at Division I Cleveland State University at 10:00 a.m., and host Kenyon College at 3:00 p.m.
