Senior Katalina Wang of the Case Western Reserve University women's tennis team reached the quarterfinal round of the singles draw of the 2025 ITA Central Regional Championships held at the Tao Tennis Center on the campus of Washington University in St. Louis on Sunday.
Wang, seeded ninth in the draw, started her day with a victory over Abigail Penados of North Central, who was seeded seventh. After dropping the first set, 6-0, Wang rallied with a 6-3 victory in the second stanza. In the winner-take-all third set, she prevailed 6-2, moving her to the quarterfinal round.
Wang faced Chicago's Anika Paul, who was also seeded ninth, in the quarterfinal. The Spartan player was able to force a tiebreaker in the first set but ultimately fell 6-7 (2-7). Paul won the second set 6-4, eliminating CWRU from the tournament.
Earlier in the weekend, Wang advanced to the quarterfinal of the doubles draw with first-year Gabby Lee. She ended the tournament with a 3-1 singles record and 2-1 doubles record, improving to 7-1 in singles this season and 6-3 in doubles this year.
Overall, Case Western Reserve went 14-9 (.609) in the regional with an 8-6 (.571) singles record and 6-3 (.667) doubles record. Nine members of the team competed in St. Louis.
After a week off from intercollegiate competition, the Spartans will wrap up their fall season with action at the Ashland Fall Invitational scheduled for October 4-5 at the Deborah Liebert Karl Tennis Complex in Ashland, Ohio.
