#4 CWRU Men’s Tennis NCAA Semifinals Preview

The fourth-ranked Case Western Reserve University men's tennis team will be aiming to reach the NCAA Division III Championship match for the fourth time in program history when it faces top-ranked Claremont-Mudd-Scripps in the semifinals of the tournament on Tuesday, May 20, at 8:00 p.m. ET at the Biszantz Family Tennis Center in Claremont, California.

What's at Stake

The Spartans can play for the NCAA Division III Championship for the fourth time in the last five years with a win over the Stags on Tuesday night. The National Championship match will be played on Thursday, May 22, at 8:00 p.m. ET against either second-ranked Denison University or third-ranked Tufts University. A loss would end the team season for the Spartans, with NCAA Individual Championships set to begin later in the week.

The Spartans

CWRU reached the semifinals with a 4-2 win over the fourth-ranked University of Chicago in the quarterfinals on Monday night. The Spartans have won 21 of their last 22 matches and seven-straight contests to improve to 28-5 overall this season. CWRU earned an automatic berth into the NCAA Championship after winning the 2025 University Athletic Association Championship over the same Chicago team it defeated for a second time on Monday. After receiving a first-round bye in the NCAA Tournament, CWRU went on to best 56th-ranked Whitman College 5-0 in the second round and 13th-ranked Kenyon College 4-0 in the third round.

The Spartans' lineup features several nationally-ranked singles players, including 11th-ranked senior Ajay Mahenthiran, 40th-ranked sophomore George Kosseifi, and 49th-ranked junior Anmay Devaraj, in addition to a nationally-ranked doubles pairing in 13th-ranked Devaraj and senior Casey Hishinuma and Devaraj. CWRU players hold a combined .745 winning percentage (246-84) in singles matches and a .692 winning percentage (108-48) in doubles play. 

The Stags

Claremont-Mudd-Scripps bested 12th-ranked Babson College in the quarterfinals on Monday night, improving to 31-2 overall and 26-0 against Division III opposition. The Stags have won 31 consecutive matches since dropping a pair of contests to Division II opponents on the first day of the season. The team's overall mark includes a 22-2 record on their home court.

The Stags' lineup features the top-ranked singles player in Division III in Advik Mareedu, along with 14th-ranked Warren Pham and 42nd-ranked Matthew Robinson. Claremont-Mudd-Scripps also has two nationally-ranked doubles pairings in 14th-ranked Caleb Settles and Brandon Vu, and 15th-ranked Josh Kim and Mareedu.

Matchup History

This will be the second match this season between the two teams, with Claremont-Mudd-Scripps having claimed a 5-2 win over the Spartans in the semifinals of the ITA Indoor National Championship on February 22. CWRU picked up a win at no. 1 doubles from Hishinuma and Devaraj and singles wins from Kosseifi in the second singles match and Hishinuma at fifth singles in the February matchup.

CWRU is 2-3 against the Stags all-time, including a 4-0 win in 2024 and a 6-3 win in 2023.

Spartan Notes

  • CWRU, making its eighth NCAA Championship appearance, stands at 22-6 all-time in tournament play.

  • This will be the team's fourth trip to the NCAA semifinals in the last five years, with the Spartans going 3-0 in their previous semifinal appearances.

  • CWRU stands at 16-3 against nationally-ranked teams this season, including a 4-3 mark against teams ranked in the top-10 nationally.

  • Junior Matthew Plunkett recorded the match-clinching win against Chicago and has now won 15 straight singles matches. He stands at 23-5 overall this year.

  • With his win on Monday, Mahenthiran now has 89 career singles victories and is one away from matching former Spartan Anthony Kanam for the third-most singles wins in team history.
