The Case Western Reserve University men's swimming and diving team set a school record in the 400 Free Relay on the final day of the 2025 University Athletic Association Championships on Saturday at the Madeleine Jude Brown Aquatic Center on the campus of Emory University in Atlanta.
The relay of juniors Emil LaSida, Mason Bencurik, William Froass, and John Drumm placed fifth in the race in 3:00.97, besting the previous school record of 3:01.16 set by Bencurik, Froass, Drumm, and senior Peter Meng earlier this season. The mark was also an NCAA B cut time.
The Spartans scored 810.5 points across the four-day meet to place sixth in the conference. Emory won the conference championship with 1682 points, followed by NYU (1586.5 points), Chicago (1448), Carnegie Mellon (1111.5), and WashU (1020.5). Trailing Case Western Reserve were Rochester (495 points) and Brandeis (322).
Drumm recorded his own NCAA B cut, placing fourth in the 200 Fly A Final in 1:47.67. Meng did the same in the 1650 Free with a time of 15:40.04, also placing fourth in the event.
LaSida and Bencurik both reached the finals of the 100 Free. LaSida placed eighth in the A Final in 46.30 seconds after a prelims time of 45.26, and Bencurik finished 15th with a time of 45.83 seconds in the B Final after a prelims time of 45.42 seconds. Froass earned a 15th-place finish in the 200 Back, finishing the B Final in 1:51.37.
In addition to Drumm, six Spartans qualified for finals in the 200 Fly. Senior Kevin Hu placed 13th in 1:52.72 and junior Adam Khatib was 15th in 1:53.32 with a preliminary time of 1:52.47. In the C Final, first-year Owen Miao placed 19th (1:54.11), junior Joshua Hernandez finished 21st (1:55.30), senior Jiro Batt was 22nd (1:55.80), and first-year Edward Steward placed 23rd overall (1:57.07).
Senior Stephen Hogeman competed in the morning session of the 1650 Free, placing 19th with a time of 16:37.94.
In the C Final of the 200 Back, senior Anthony Colangelo recorded a time of 1:53.88 to place 21st, senior Griffin Gushman placed 23rd in 1:55.76, and sophomore Michael Boelens finished behind him in 1:57.19.
Three CWRU swimmers reached the finals of the 200 Breast. In 15th was first-year Edgar Rutkauskas who completed the B Final in 2:03.09. With a time of 2:04.70 in the C Final, senior Jiro Batt placed 19th, and first-year Sam Schultz finished 23rd in 2:07.98.
The Spartans will have one final chance to improve their qualification times for the NCAA Championships during the End of Year Invitational on Friday, February 21 and Saturday, February 22 at the Veale Natatorium in Cleveland.
