Box Score The Case Western Reserve University women's tennis team began its fall season with a trip to Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh for the two-day CMU Invitational #2 at the CMU Tennis Courts on Saturday and Sunday.
Overall, the Spartans went 7-17 in singles matches and 6-9 in doubles matches against both the host school and Division I Duquesne University.
Graduate student Laurel Utterback went undefeated in singles play, besting Divya Venkatarama of Carnegie Mellon 6-4, 4-6, 10-6, and Shelly Zinchenko of Carnegie Mellon, 7-5, 6-4. In doubles play, Utterback had a 1-1 record, winning a match with senior Lily McCloskey.
McCloskey won her other doubles match to pace CWRU in doubles play. She paired with junior Katalina Wang to defeat Carnegie Mellon's Zoe Angell and Ancele Dolensek, 6-3. The two doubles wins gave McCloskey 65 for her career, moving her into third place in program history. The program record of 76 was set by Nithya Kanagasegar from 2014-18.
Wang, senior Anna Kan, and junior Asha Shukla also picked up a pair of doubles wins for the Spartans. First-year Maya Brink earned her first collegiate singles and doubles wins, going 2-3 overall at the invite. Kan, Shukla, junior Ellior Rose, and sophomore Katie Wong each added singles wins.
CWRU will take a week off from competition before continuing its fall season at the Denison Big Red Invitational on September 21 and 22 in Granville, Ohio.
