Box Score The 19th-ranked Case Western Reserve University women's tennis team defeated 26th-ranked University of Mary Washington 7-2 on the road at the Hegmann Family Tennis Complex in Fredericksburg, Virginia, on Sunday.
The Spartans improved to 8-3 with the win, while the Eagles fell to 4-5.
For the second straight match, CWRU started with a sweep of the three doubles contests. Junior Radha Patel and sophomore Katalina Wang finished first at second doubles, defeating Emily Beckner and Addison Felts, 8-1. Juniors Hannah Kassaie and Lily McCloskey followed with an 8-4 win over Amanda Hagino and Hana Kimmey at first doubles. To complete the sweep, seniors Katherine Wang and Pallavi Goculdas prevailed 8-6 at third doubles over Jacey Copeland and Riley Smith.
Kassaie gave the Spartans a 4-0 lead with a 6-1, 6-1, win at first singles over Hagino. The win was the 61st of her career, moving Kassaie into second place all-time in program history in singles victories. She trails former Spartan Surya Khadilkar, who won 65 matches between 2012-16.
Sophomore Asha Shukla clinched the match victory by winning 6-2, 6-2 at sixth singles over Copeland. Patel followed with a 6-4, 6-1 win over Smith at fifth singles, and McCloskey earned the final singles win for the Spartans at second singles, 4-6, 6-3, 10-8 over Kimmey.
Mary Washington picked up points at third singles (6-4, 6-2) and fourth singles (7-6 (8), 4-6, 10-8).
CWRU will wrap up its trip to Virginia with a matchup against Gustavus Adolphus tomorrow at 9 a.m.
