No. 17 Women’s Tennis Sweeps Oberlin, Otterbein on Sunday

The 17th-ranked Case Western Reserve University women's tennis team swept a pair of regional opponents on Sunday at the Mayfield Village Racquet Club in Mayfield, Ohio, defeating Otterbein University and Oberlin College 9-0.

With the two wins, the Spartans improved to 3-1 in dual matches this spring. The Cardinals dropped to 4-2 and the Yeowomen fell to 0-4.

#17 CWRU 9, Otterbein 0

Case Western Reserve started the day with three wins in doubles play over Otterbein. Senior Katherine Wang and sophomore Elsa Syed won 8-1 at third doubles over Rachelle Moses and Julia Gillin. Senior Pallavi Goculdas and junior Anna Kan followed with an 8-1 victory at second doubles over Olivia Eckels and Aubrey McMahon. To finish the sweep, juniors Hannah Kassaie and Lily McCloskey defeated Lillia Walter and Erin Storrer 8-5 at first doubles.

Goculdas began singles play by beating Moses 6-0, 6-1, at fourth singles. To clinch the team victory, sophomore Asha Shukla won 6-1, 6-0, over Cassady Shough at third singles.

Sophomore Katalina Wang followed with a 6-1, 6-3, win over Walter at second singles, and first-year Kareena Sivanesan picked up a 6-2, 6-4, victory over McMahon at sixth singles. At fifth singles, sophomore Ellior Rose fought back against Eckels after dropping the first set 6-7 (7-0), winning the next two sets 6-2 and 10-6 to add a point to the team total. To complete the sweep, McCloskey bested Storrer 7-5, 7-5 at first singles.

#17 CWRU 9, Oberlin 0

With one point at singles and doubles guaranteed by forfeit, CWRU needed just three wins in competitive matches to best Oberlin in the second contest of the day.

Sivanesan and first-year Prachi Shah earned a win at second doubles, 8-1, over Amelia Bronfman and Moe Ariyoshi, and Goculdas and junior Radha Patel bested Anna Pastore and Freya Rahm at first doubles 8-2 to complete the doubles sweep.

To clinch the team win, Shah defeated Ariyoshi 6-0, 6-0, at fourth singles. Sivanesan followed with a 6-0, 6-0, sweep of her own, beating Robyn Gurujal at fifth singles without dropping a point. Senior Chloe Ku contributed a 6-1, 6-0 victory over Bronfman at third singles, and Patel bested Rahm by the same score at second singles. In the final match of the day, Kan defeated Pastore 6-4, 6-3 at first singles.

The Spartans will next travel to Granville, Ohio, to face a pair of teams on the campus of Denison University. On March 2, CWRU will take on Kalamazoo at 3 p.m. The following day, the 20th-ranked Big Red will challenge 17th-ranked Case Western Reserve at 3 p.m.
