Box Score The 17th-ranked Case Western Reserve University women's tennis team dropped a 6-3 match to 10th-ranked Carnegie Mellon University on Saturday evening at the Alpha Tennis Club in Pittsburgh.
With the loss, the Spartans dropped to 1-1 on the season. The Tartans improved to 5-1 in dual matches.
CWRU held a 2-1 lead after doubles play, responding to a loss at third doubles with back-to-back tiebreaker wins at first and second doubles. At first doubles, junior Lily McCloskey and sophomore Katalina Wang defeated Danna Taylor and Anna Chow 8-7 (4). Juniors Hannah Kassaie and Anna Kan followed with an 8-7 (6) win over Zoe Angell and Divya Venkatarama at second doubles.
With a win at fourth singles, the Spartans took a 3-1 advantage in the match. Kan defeated Angell 6-2, 6-1, to increase the CWRU lead. However, Carnegie Mellon won the next three singles matches to take a 4-3 lead with two matches left. The Tartans prevailed at sixth singles 6-3, 6-3, to clinch the match.
The Spartans will host Oberlin and Otterbein on Sunday at the Mayfield Village Racquet Club, starting with the Cardinals at 1 p.m. and followed by the Yeowomen at 5 p.m.
