Sophomore Tanush Anand broke the school record in the triple jump as the Case Western Reserve University men's and women's track and field teams began the 2024-25 indoor season by hosting the 11th Annual Spartan Holiday Alumni Meet on Saturday at the Veale Center in Cleveland.
Anand bounded 13.88 meters in the event to best the previous record of 13.71 meters set by Ananth Suresh in 2019. He placed fourth in the competition. Anand also recorded a mark of 6.43 meters in the long jump, the ninth-best leap in program history.
Three Spartans won events at the season-opening meet. Sophomore Holly Schreiber placed first in the pole vault as the only jumper to clear 3.52 meters. Senior Jordan Su went the furthest in the triple jump, bounding 10.24 meters, and junior Melanie Taylor won the 800-meter run in 2:26.08.
CWRU placed second and third in the weight throw with graduate student Ailean Duffie finishing as the runner-up with a heave of 15.35 meters and junior Michelle Lee taking third with a toss that traveled 15.23 meters.
In sprinting events, junior Grace Misiunas placed second in the final of the 60-meter hurdles in 9.49 seconds, and first-year Riley Friedman was the runner-up in the 200-meter dash with a time of 26.99 seconds.
Finally, the CWRU 4x400-meter relay of Misiunas, Taylor, and first-years Eyoha Teshome and Siena Kannenberg finished second with a time of 4:18.46.
For the men's team, first-year Brendan Bradish and graduate student Yusuf Shaaban both recorded top individual finishes for CWRU, placing third in events. Bradish secured the bronze medal in the mile run with a time of 4:32.14, and Shaaban was third to cross the line in the 800-meter run in 2:04.66.
The Spartan 4x400-meter relay of first-year Paxton Zelik, junior Aaron Brula, sophomore Jeremiah Broughton, and first-year Charlie Stipanovich placed third with a time of 3:36.24. Junior Joshua Park advanced to the final of the 60-meter hurdles, placing fourth in 8.72 seconds.
The teams will be off for winter break, returning to action on Saturday, January 25, 2025, with the SPIRE Midwest Invite in Geneva, Ohio.
