The 16th-ranked Case Western Reserve University men's swimming and diving team and 17th-ranked CWRU women's swimming and diving team swept Ohio Wesleyan on Saturday at Veale Natatorium in Cleveland. The Spartan men's team won 241-35 and the Spartan women's team prevailed 249-46.
Both Spartan teams improved to 2-0 on the season, while both Battling Bishop teams fell to 0-1.
The 200 Medley Relay of junior Claire Kozma and seniors Simone Vale, Kate Menzer, and Gabriella Chambers started the meet with win in 1:49.05, and the 200 Free Relay of Kozma, Chambers, junior Eliza Dixon and senior Kelly Vann ended the meet with a time of 1:38.94.
Chambers and Kozma tied for the win in the 50 Free, with both touching the wall at exactly 24.11. Chambers added a victory in the 500 Free in 5:20.39, and Kozma claimed a second individual win in the 100 Free with a time of 53.49. In the 400 IM, Menzer was the first to finish, recording a time of 4:48.82.
Both seniors Selah Dean and Abigail Wilkov won a pair of individual events for CWRU. Dean placed first in the 200 Fly with a time of 2:13.38 and 200 Back with a time of 2:12.94. Wilkov swept the diving events, winning the 1-meter dive with a score of 275.60 and 3-meter dive with a score of 269.45.
In freestyle events, senior Angeli Paull won the 1000 Free in 11:08.87, and senior Adriana Kamor claimed the 200 Free in 1:59.00.
Seniors Madison McDaniels and Erica Rice swept the breaststroke events with McDaniels winning the 100-yard event in 1:09.68 and Rice securing the 200-yard race with a time of 2:36.84.
Senior Amelia Myhrvold and junior Kailyn Smith added wins in the 100 Back (59.17) and 100 Fly (1:00.45), respectively.
The men's team also swept both relay events with the 200 Medley Relay of senior Ben Zuo and juniors William Froass, Julian Kim, and Mason Bencurik placing first in 1:34.48 and the 200 Free Relay of Froass, Zuo, Bencurik, and junior Zach Halsey winning with a time of 1:25.23. Bencurik won both the 100 Free and 200 Free with times of 47.03 and 1:44.11, and Froass added a victory in the 100 Fly in 51.33.
Spartans placed first in the sprint and distance freestyle events with senior Stephen Hogeman touching the wall first in the 50 Free in 22.18, senior Griffin Gushman taking the 500 Free in 4:52.29, and first-year Owen Miao winning the 1000 Free in 9:56.53.
Seniors Anthony Colangelo and Zach Toothman swept the backstroke events for Case Western Reserve. Colangelo claimed the 100-yard race in 54.20 seconds and Toothman won the 200 Back with a time of 1:59.89. Senior Jiro Batt and junior Spencer Ahten helped CWRU claimed both breaststroke events. Batt touched the wall first at 1:01.03 and Ahten won the 200 Breast in 2:12.31.
Senior Peter Meng (200 Fly, 1:54.26) and junior Joshua Hernandez (400 IM, 4:13.89) added wins for the Spartans. On the diving board, senior Alex Waltman won the 1-meter dive with a score of 275.05.
The Spartans will next head to Pittsburgh to face Carnegie Mellon on Saturday, November 2. The CMU men's team is ranked seventh in Division III and the Tartan women's team is ranked 15th.
