The 12th-ranked Case Western Reserve University women's tennis team won its final match before the University Athletic Association Championship, defeating Oberlin College 7-2 on Thursday evening at the Hunsinger Courts in Oberlin, Ohio.
The Spartans improved to 13-3 on the season with their sixth straight win, while the Yeowomen fell to 8-8.
Oberlin tied the score with a point at first doubles, but sophomore Anna Kan and senior Nina Hoog won 8-6 at second doubles over Lydia Zafeiri and Dina Nouaime to give CWRU a 2-1 advantage after doubles play. The Yeowomen forfeited the third doubles match, with first-years Elsa Syed and Asha Shukla earning a win.
Oberlin was forced to forfeit the fourth, fifth, and sixth singles matches to give Case Western Reserve a 5-1 advantage at the start of singles play. At third singles, Shukla defeated Zafeiri 6-3, 6-1, and at second singles Syed won 7-6 (7-1), 6-2 over Anna Pastore for the team's seventh point. At first singles, first-year Katalina Wang fell 2-6, 5-7 to Marta Laska, the 23rd-ranked singles player in the Central Region.
The Spartans will next be in action at the UAA Championship, held in Altamonte Springs, Florida, from Thursday, April 20 to Saturday, April 22. The tournament draw will be released early next week, with quarterfinal action scheduled to start on Thursday.
