The top-ranked Case Western Reserve University men's tennis team opened its spring break trip on Saturday afternoon with a 9-0 win over Hardin-Simmons University at the USTA National Campus in Orlando, Florida.
The win was the 11th straight for the Spartans who improved to 11-2 overall. Hardin-Simmons fell to 6-4 with the loss.
Senior James Hopper and sophomore Ansh Shah earned the first win of the day for the Spartans, defeating Davyn Williford and Zach Fowler 8-0 at third doubles. Seniors Diego Maza and Michael Sutanto added an 8-2 win over James Moore and Desmond O'Shea at second doubles, and junior Sahil Dayal and senior Chris Provenzano added an 8-3 win at first doubles over Brice Bradshaw and Nathan Schoendorf to put CWRU up 3-0.
Hopper's doubles win was the 106 of his career, moving him into a tie for the second-most all-time in CWRU history with his former partner Jonathan Powell.
In singles play, Shah defeated O'Shea 6-0, 6-1 at fourth singles and sophomore Casey Hishinuma added a 6-0, 6-1 win at sixth singles over Fowler to secure the team win for the Spartans. Adding singles wins for CWRU on Saturday was sophomore Ajay Mahenthiran at no. 5 singles (6-1, 6-2 over Williford), Hopper at no. 1 singles (6-2, 6-2 over Bradshaw), junior Vishwa Aduru at no. 2 singles (6-3, 6-2 over Schoendorf), and Sutanto at no. 3 singles (6-3, 6-3 over Moore).
In other action on Saturday, the Spartans bested Florida Palms 7-0 in an exhibition match.
The Spartans will continue their spring break tomorrow with matches against Lynn University (ranked 28th in DII) and Florida National in Boca Raton, Florida.
