The top-ranked Case Western Reserve University men's tennis team continued in its winning ways on Sunday, as the Spartans rolled to an 8-1 win over Kenyon College in Gambier, Ohio.
The win was the eighth-straight for the Spartans and the team's 35th-consecutive regular season win against a Division III opponent, as CWRU improved to 17-2 overall. The win also marked the 10th in as many tries against a ranked DIII squad this season for the Spartans.
Kenyon dropped to 5-6 following the loss.
CWRU swept doubles play for the 13th time during the campaign on Sunday. Graduate student Jonathan Powell and sophomore Sahil Dayal opened doubles play with an 8-1 win over Eric Zhang and Luis Andres Platas in the second match, and juniors James Hopper and Michael Sutanto followed with an 8-3 win over Christian Picot and Christophe Leblanc in the no. 1 doubles contest. Senior Chaitanya Aduru and first-year Ansh Shah extended the Spartans' lead to 3-0 with an 8-4 win in the third doubles match against Thomas Kallarakal and Rishil Kondapaneni.
Powell went on to top Kondapaneni (ranked 20th in the Central Region) in the third singles match, 6-4, 6-4, to give CWRU a 4-0 lead, and Aduru clinched the win for the Spartans with a 6-2, 2-6, 6-3 win over Kallarakal in the second singles match.
Adding to the Spartans' win, Sutanto defeated Platas (ranked 14th in the region) 4-6, 6-0, 6-3 at no. 1 singles, first-year Ajay Mahenthiran claimed a 6-1, 6-7, 6-2 win over Zhang at no. 4 singles, and first-year Casey Hishinuma earned a 6-1 6-0 win against Rakkan Audeh at fifth singles. In the final match of the day, sophomore Daniel French suffered a 6-2, 6-4 loss at no. 6 singles to Henry Wessel.
The Spartans will be back in action next Sunday, April 10, as the team travels to Kalamazoo, Michigan to take on 28th-ranked Kalamazoo College.
