CWRU Men's Tennis Finishes Second at 2022 UAA Championships

In a battle of Division III's two top-ranked teams, the no. 1 Case Western Reserve University men's tennis team suffered a 5-0 loss to the second-ranked University of Chicago to place second at the 2022 University Athletic Association Championships at Sanlando Park in Altamonte Springs, Florida.

The loss was the Spartans' first of the season to a Division III opponent, as CWRU dropped to 21-4 overall. The second-place finish was the team's best-ever at the UAA Championships.

Chicago, which claimed the second UAA title in program history, improved to 17-1 on the year with the win.

The Spartans dug themselves an early hole in the match, dropping all three doubles matches. At third doubles, junior Michael Sutanto and senior Chaitanya Aduru suffered an 8-4 setback against Sachin Das and Alex Guzhva, while graduate student Jonathan Powell and junior James Hopper fell 8-5 at no. 1 doubles to Christian Alshon and Derek Hsieh. In the second doubles contest, sophomores Sahil Dayal and Vishwa Aduru led early, but were ultimately defeated in a tiebreaker by Arjun Asokumar and Andrei Leonov 8-7.

At fourth singles, Guzhva earned a straight-set win against Sutanto, 6-0, 6-1, to put the Maroons a victory away from clinching. Leonov would later clinch the title for Chicago with a 7-5, 6-3 win over Powell at sixth singles.

When play was stopped, Hopper had split the first two sets with Alshon at no. 1 singles, 6-4, 4-6, Vishwa Aduru was up 6-5 in the second set against Hsiesh after falling 6-4 in the first set at second singles, first-year Ansh Shah split the first two sets with Das, 4-6, 6-2, at third singles, and Chaitanya Aduru led Shramay Dhawan 6-2, 4-3.

Case Western Reserve will now await the announcement of the field for the 2022 NCAA Division III Championships, as the Spartans will be a strong candidate to receive an at-large bid to the tournament. Team selections, the full bracket and host sites for the first three rounds will be posted to ncaa.com by noon on Monday, May 9.
