#1 Men's Tennis Tops #13 N.C. Wesleyan 7-2

The top-ranked Case Western Reserve University men's tennis team won its seventh-straight match on Saturday afternoon, defeating 13th-ranked North Carolina Wesleyan University 7-2 at the Lakewood Racquet Club in Mansfield, Ohio.

The Spartans improved to 16-2 overall with the win, including a 14-0 record against Division III opponents. CWRU has now won 34-straight regular season matches against Division III opposition, dating back to the 2020 season.

The Bishops fell to 13-3 with the loss.

CWRU fell behind early in the match, as sophomores Vishwa Aduru and Sahil Dayal dropped an 8-5 decision at no. 2 doubles to Max Robinson and Roberto Puig. However, junior James Hopper and graduate student Jonathan Powell (ranked second in the Central Region) evened the match with an 8-5 win at no. 1 doubles over Jhonny Acosta and Juan Pablo Vallejo (ranked third in the Atlantic South Region), and senior Chaitanya Aduru and junior Michael Sutanto gave CWRU its first lead of the contest with an 8-6 win over Thato Holmes and Tshepo Mosarwa at third doubles.

First-year Ansh Shah, the ninth-ranked player in the Central Region, extended CWRU's advantage with a 6-2, 6-4 win over Vallejo at third singles, and first-year Ajay Mahenthiran defeated Diego Segovia 6-4, 6-3 at sixth singles to give the Spartans a 4-1 lead. Powell later provided the match clincher for CWRU with a 4-6, 6-4, 6-4 win against Luca Knese in the fifth singles contest.

Chaitanya Aduru added to the win, claiming a victory over Puig, who retired down 6-1, 4-6, 3-1 in the third set of the fourth singles match. In a matchup of the top-ranked players in their respective regions, Acosta came away with a 6-4, 6-4 win against Hopper at no. 1 singles. Completing the win for the Spartans, Vishwa Aduru, ranked 16th in the Central Region, won in a third-set tiebreaker over John Falke (ranked 21st in the Atlantic South Region), 6-1, 1-6, 7-6 (4).

The Spartans will be back in action tomorrow, facing 24th-ranked Kenyon College at 10:00 a.m. in Gambier, Ohio.
