No. 1 Spartans Sweep 22nd-Ranked Carnegie Mellon to Wrap-Up Regular Season

The top-ranked Case Western Reserve University men's tennis team put a bow on its 2022 regular season on Saturday afternoon with a 9-0 win over 22nd-ranked Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.

The win was the Spartans' 10th 9-0 victory of the season and their second of the year against Carnegie Mellon, as CWRU improved to 19-3 overall on the season. The Tartans dropped to 5-10 on the campaign following the loss.

In doubles action, the Spartans' no. 2 pairing of sophomores Vishwa Aduru and Sahil Dayal struck first, claiming an 8-1 win against Brandon Aprill and Derek Wong. At no. 3 doubles, senior Chaitanya Aduru and junior Michael Sutanto followed with an 8-3 win against Arjan Bedi and Nicholas Wernink, while at no. 1 doubles, junior James Hopper and graduate student Jonathan Powell, ranked second in the Central Region, topped Jonathan Nottingham and Matthew Poh 8-3.

Hopper, ranked first in the region, was the first to finish in singles play, claiming a 6-0, 6-1 win over Aprill, ranked 11th in the Atlantic South, in the no. 1 singles match. Shortly thereafter, first-year Casey Hishinuma clinched the team win for the Spartans with a 6-0, 6-1 win at no. 6 singles over Bedi.

Adding to the CWRU victory were Chaitanya Aduru with a 6-1, 6-2 win over Nottingham at no. 5 singles, first-year Ansh Shah (ranked ninth in the region) with a 6-2, 6-4 win at no. 3 singles against Benny Zhou, Sutanto (ranked 22nd in the region) with a 6-1, 6-2 win over Poh at no. 4 singles, and Vishwa Aduru (ranked 16th in the region) with a 6-3, 6-0 win at no. 2 singles against Wernink.

The Spartans ended the regular season with a perfect 12-0 record against ranked Division III opponents and have won 37-straight regular season matches against Division III opposition overall.

With the regular season now complete, the Spartans will await the seeding and matchups for the 2022 University Athletic Association Championships at Sanlando Park in Altamonte Springs, Florida from Thursday, April 21 through Saturday, April 23. Seedings and quarterfinal matchups will be announced early next week in advance of the tournament.
