The 12th-ranked Case Western Reserve University women's tennis team extended its winning streak to six matches with a 9-0 win over #28 Christopher Newport University at the Mayfield Village Racquet Club in Mayfield, Ohio on Friday afternoon to open Senior Weekend.
The Spartans improve to 13-1 on the season, while the Captains fall to 4-6.
Case Western Reserve started the match with a sweep in doubles play to open a 3-0 lead. First-years Hannah Kassaie and Lily McCloskey opened with an 8-4 win at first doubles over Tessa Trate and Raine Weis. At third doubles, first-year Radha Patel and sophomore Katherine Wang added an 8-4 win over Kiersten Chang and Karina Crivtonencu. Completing the sweep at second doubles were junior Nina Hoog and sophomore Pallavi Goculdas, who bested Megan Bauer and Mia Linam 8-5.
First-year Anna Kan did not drop a point at fifth singles, defeating Crivtonencu 6-0, 6-0. Kassaie clinched the match with a 6-2, 6-2 win over Trate at first singles. McCloskey won 6-4, 6-1 over Weis at second singles, and Patel bested Chang 6-3, 6-1 at third singles. Wang won a hard-fought match at sixth singles, fighting back after losing the first set to claim the second set and the third-set tiebreaker. She defeated Kendra Womack 2-6, 6-2, 10-7. First-year Madeleine Eiss similarly came back from a deficit at fourth singles, beating Linam 3-6, 6-1, 10-6.
The Spartans will continue Senior Weekend when they face Oberlin College on Saturday at 1:15 p.m. at the Mayfield Village Racquet Club.
