The top-ranked Case Western Reserve University men's tennis team extended its regular season winning streak to 33-consecutive matches against Division III opponents with three wins on Friday. The Spartans three victories each came by a sweep, as CWRU earned 9-0 triumphs against Wittenberg University, Oberlin College and Ohio Wesleyan University during the day.
The Spartans improved to 15-2 overall on the season following the three wins, including a 13-0 record against Division III teams.
CWRU opened the day in Mayfield against Wittenberg at the Mayfield Village Racquet Club. The Spartans rolled through the three doubles matches, with junior James Hopper and graduate student Jonathan Powell besting John DeVito and Brayden Kopp 8-2 at no. 1 doubles, junior Chris Provenzano and sophomore Sahil Dayal defeating Jake Stockhausen and Ethan Libby 8-2 at no. 2 doubles, and graduate student Anthony Kanam and senior Chaitanya Aduru beating Joe Patton and Roy Jensen 8-0 at no. 3 doubles.
The Spartans went on to win all six singles matches in straight sets. In the first singles match, sophomore Vishwa Aduru earned a 6-1, 6-0 win over Kopp, and junior Michael Sutanto topped DeVito 6-2, 6-2 in the second singles match. At third singles, first-year Ajay Mahenthiran picked up a 6-2, 6-0 win against Stockhausen, and first-year Casey Hishinuma claimed a 6-0, 6-2 win against Patton at fourth singles. Rounding out the first match of the day for the Spartans, sophomore Daniel French won 6-2, 6-0 against Mark Trinka at fifth singles and first-year Pranav Ikkurthy notched a 6-2, 6-2 win against Libby at sixth singles.
Wittenberg dropped to 5-6 following the loss.
CWRU then traveled west to Oberlin College in Oberlin, Ohio for its final two matches of the day, beginning with a contest against the host. Doubles play once again resulted in a sweep for the Spartans with Sutanto and Hopper winning 8-3 over Grant North and James Dill in the first match, Dayal and French claiming an 8-7 triumph over Sean Billerbeck and Rohan Gold in the second match, and Provenzano and first-year Ansh Shah winning 8-1 in the third match over Ben Echikson and Sebastien Naginski.
Playing at no. 1 singles, Sutanto defeated Billerbeck 6-0, 7-5, while Mahenthiran bested Dill 6-3, 6-4 at no. 2 singles and Hishinuma topped Gold 6-1, 6-1 at no. 3 singles. Junior Diego Maza earned a 6-1, 6-1 win over Naginski at fourth singles, first-year Ben Martin defeated North at fifth singles 6-1, 6-2, and senior Max Vicario completed the sweep with a sixth singles win over Echikson, 6-3, 6-0.
The Yeomen fell to 3-9 after the setback to the Spartans.
Against the Battling Bishops, Dayal and Shah bested Marcelo Aguilar and Ben Stein 8-3 at no. 1 doubles, Vishwa Aduru and Ikkurthy defeated Alex Riess and Jose Mancilla 8-4 at no. 2 doubles and junior John Kasner and Maza claimed an 8-1 win over Grant Brooks and Elliot Spicer.
In singles play, Kanam defeated Stein 6-4, 6-2 at no. 1 singles, Ikkurthy came out on top 6-0, 6-1 over Mancilla at no. 2 singles, Martin topped Riess 6-2, 6-0 at no. 3 singles, Provenzano bested Aguilar 6-3, 6-0 at no. 4 singles, sophomore Yuvraj Narang won a 6-0, 6-1 match against Tucker Strawser, and Dayal completed the sweep with a 6-1, 6-0 win against Brooks.
The loss dropped Ohio Wesleyan to 5-11 on the campaign.
Case Western Reserve will be back in action on Saturday, April 2 against 13th-ranked North Carolina Wesleyan in Gambier, Ohio.
