The Case Western Reserve University women's tennis team's eight-match winning streak was snapped at the DeWitt Tennis Center in Holland, Michigan on Sunday as the Spartans fell to the University of Chicago 9-0.
CWRU dropped to 7-1 on the season, while Chicago improved to 5-1.
The Spartans fell behind early, losing all three doubles matches. Junior Nina Hoog and first-year Madeleine Eiss, the No. 25 doubles team in the country, fell 1-8 at second doubles to Claudia Ng and Eugenia Lee. Junior Savannah Bright and first-year Radha Patel dropped the third doubles match 5-8 to Annika Pandey and Nicole Geller. First-years Hannah Kassaie and Lily McCloskey lost 5-8 to Sylwia Mikos and Shianna Guo, the second-ranked doubles team in the country, at first doubles.
At first singles, Kassaie, ranked 19th in the country, fell in three sets at first singles to Mikos, ranked 10th in the country and first in the Central Region. Kassaie dropped the first set 6-7, but responded with a 6-2 win in set two. However, she could not keep the momentum going, losing the third set tiebreaker. First-year Anna Kan also lost in three sets, falling to Pandey 6-3, 3-6, 1-6 at sixth singles.
McCloskey lost at second singles to Guo, the No. 30 singles player in the country, and Patel lost to Miranda Yuan, the 14th best singles player in the country, at fifth singles. At third singles, Bright fell to Ng, and at fourth singles, Eiss lost to Geller.
The Spartans will look to rebound as they return home from their three-match road trip to take on the College of Wooster on Friday, March 4 at 7:30 p.m.
