The Case Western Reserve University men's tennis team picked up an 8-1 win over Washington & Lee University on Sunday morning, during the team's first home match of the 2022 spring season at the Mayfield Village Racquet Club in Mayfield, Ohio.
The win was the Spartans' 22nd-consecutive regular season win against a Division III opponent, as the team improved to 3-1 overall on the season. The Generals dropped to 0-3 on the campaign following the loss.
CWRU was dominant in doubles play on Sunday, winning all three matches. Junior James Hopper and graduate student Jonathan Powell picked up an 8-0 win in the no. 1 doubles match against Eli Hirshberg and T.J. Rudden. At no. 2 doubles, senior Chaitanya Aduru and junior Michael Sutanto followed with an 8-2 win over James Kurani and Will Kistler, and first-year Ansh Shah and sophomore Vishwa Aduru secured an 8-2 win in the no. 3 doubles match against Evan Brady and Connor Coleman.
Shah went on to pick up the Spartans' first single wins of the day, defeating Rudden 6-0, 6-1 in the no. 2 match. Vishwa Aduru would then clinch the victory for CWRU with a 6-0, 6-2 win at first singles against Hirshberg.
Adding to CWRU's win were Sutanto in the third singles match, 6-1, 6-4 against Kistler, first-year Ajay Mahenthiran in the fourth-singles match, 6-3, 7-5 against Coleman, and first-year Casey Hishinuma in the sixth-singles match, 6-2, 6-4 over Kurani. The Spartans only setback during the day came in a three-set loss by junior Diego Maza in the fifth singles match to Brady, 6-0, 5-7, 10-4.
Case Western Reserve will be back in action next Saturday, February 19, as the team will travel to Granville, Ohio to matchup against Denison University.
