Case Western Reserve University senior James Hopper and junior Vishwa Aduru, the third-seeded duo in the doubles draw, advanced to the quarterfinals of the ITA Cup with a three-set win in their opening match of the tournament on Thursday night at the Rome Tennis Center in Rome, Georgia. By winning the match, Hopper and Aduru earned All-America honors for the 2022-23 campaign.
Facing John Zakowski and Luke VanDonslear of the University of Wisconsin – Whitewater, Hopper and Aduru overcame a 6-3 setback in the opening set of the match to win the second set 6-1 and then claim a match win with a 10-7 victory in the third set.
Thursday's match marked the third match between the top doubles teams from CWRU and Wisconsin-Whitewater in the last three months. Last year, Hopper and former Spartan Jonathan Powell fell to Zakowski and Alex Gray in the third round of the NCAA Team Tournament, before defeating the pair in the round of 16 of the NCAA Division III Doubles Championship.
This is the fourth-straight season that Hopper has earned All-America honors, while Aduru claimed the first All-America honor of his career.
Action at the ITA Cup will resume tomorrow with two more rounds of doubles matches, with the quarterfinals and semifinals of the draw slated to be played.
